McKern was born in 1918 at Iowa.3 He died on April 2, 1944 at Appanoose Co., Iowa.4 He Carl McKern, 26, was killed Sunday Sunday evening when the car which he was driving overturned a few miles southwest of Cincinnati, Iowa, and funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p. m., Thursday, April 6, at the Main Station church with the Rev. Harley Bailey officiating. McKern was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert McKern of seven miles northwest of Moravia. Four others of the seven occupants occupants of the car were injured, one seriously. With McKern in the car were Mrs. Effie Foster, Fred Eagle and Mrs. Margaret Eagle, Mrs. Marjorie King and baby, Barbara Joan, and Ray Gilkinson, all of Centerville. Eagle said he and the others had hired McKern to take them to Powersville to visit Eagle's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Osborn. They were returning about 7:30 p. m., Sunday when the car began to weave on the gravel road, went out of control into a ditch, and turned over one and one-half times before coming to a stop, Eagle said. McKern was pinned beneath the steering wheel, Mrs. Ring and the baby were thrown on top of him, and others were thrown toward the front of the car. Although the others were able to kick out the windows and crawl from the car, they were unable to remove McKern and Mrs. Foster until the automobile had been righted. Mrs. Foster received severe injuries in the wreck. McKern is survived by his parents; parents; his wife, the former Mary Beth Sanders; three children, Robert, Gerald and Colleen; and two brothers, Sgt. Clark McKern of Camp Swift, Texas, and Chester McKern, serving in the southwest Pacific. on April 6, 1944.4

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:30 PM, Friday, July 19th in The Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington, 1111 East Blvd, with Rev. Jim Posey officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Ritchie McKern; a son, Carl B. McKern and his wife Judy, of Charlotte; granddaughter, Alysia McKern, of Charlotte and three step-grandchildren Chris Holbrooks, wife Chandra and daughter Grace, of Maiden, NC; Julie Smith and husband Scott, of Denver, NC and Holly Watson and husband Matthew, of Stanley, NC. His two brothers, Clark and Carl McKern, preceded him in death. on July 18, 2002.7

She was taken to the hospital several weeks ago from the home of her daughter Mrs. Burdette Ward where she had been since her return from California.Bessie Caroline McKern Burns was born April 25, 1882 in Nebraska, the daughter of William H. and Arthelia McKern. She was united in marriage to William K. Burns on December 24, 1903, who preceded her in death January 29, 1948. Survivors are her three children, a son, Virgil Burns of Delhi, California, two daughters, Ruby Tarr, Kingston, New York, and Edna Ward of Moravia. There are six grandchildren, Patricia June, Dorothy Lee and David Burton Tarr, Linda Carol, Nancy Jo and Janie Louise Ward, her brother, Guy McKern of Moravia and a sister, Grace Smith of Des Moines.Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 24, at 2:00 o'clock at the E. U. B. church in Moravia with Turner funeral home in charge. Rev. Leo Wilson officiated. Burial was at the Salem cemetery. on October 25, 1950.2

He departed this life from the St. Joseph hospital in Centerville on December 15, 1964, after suffering a stroke nine days earlier. He was united in marriage to Lottie Blanche Gladfelder on November 10, 1908. To this union were born two daughters, Doris and Dorothy. Those survivors left to mourn his paasing are his wife, Blanche, and the two daupters, Mrs. Newt Long of Moravia and Mrs. Elbert Perry of Route 2, Albia, a granddaughter, Mrs. Boyd Paxston of Moravia, and a sister, Mrs. Grace Smith of Miami, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Bessie Burns. Guy was a member of the Christian church. He had not been able to attend in recent years because of a physical handicap. He was a quiet, yet friendly man. He was always known as a strong man whom others respected. He was a true farmer and lived next to the soil. He enjoyed fishing and spent much time in his alter years with this sport. on December 24, 1964.6

     Lydia Marie Gregory Lydia Marie McKern, wife of Lewis A. McKern, passed away at her family home Saturday, Jan. 8, 1949, at 8 p.m., following a long illness. Her death at the age of 72, is the first break in the family of 16. There are seven sons and seven daughters, all residents of Oregon. Lydia was born in Alton, KS on April 15, 1877. Her parents were Elisha and Rachel Gregory who came to Alton, KS from Iowa and took up a homestead. She was the eldest of nine children. Surviving the two brothers, Russell of Kansas City, and Bill Gregory of Valley Falls, KS, five sisters, Mrs. Lena Terrell and Mrs. Laura Griffin of Alton, KS, Mrs. Tula McCoy of Kiowa, CO, Mrs. Edna Startzell, Grandview, WI, and Mrs. Alice Hopkins of Reidsville, NC. Lydia resided in Oregon 35 years, and in Brownsville 13 years. She was a member of the Friends Church in Kansas. Surviving are the widower, L. A. McKern, seven sons: Claude, Harold, and Walter of Brownsville, Clarence of Yoncalla. Edward of Independence, Ralph of Valley Junction, and Kenneth of Valsetz. The daughters are: Mrs Ethel Alexander of Sweet Home, Mrs. Blanche Holgate of Waldport, Mrs. Gertrude Hutton of Portland, Mrs. Beulah Strickler of Logston, Mrs. Mabel Bugbee of Eugene, Mrs. Gladys Syron of Lebanon, and Mrs. Mildred Hayes of Sutherlin. There are also 39 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Brownsville Baptist church Tuesday, Jan 11, at 2 p.m., Rev. Menno Rempel officiating. Music was by Mrs. L. B. Morse, soloist, and Mrs. J H Curtis, accompanist.      Frank Selby Frank Selby, son of Justice and Eliza Jane Selby, was born eight miles east of Moravia on April 6, 1867, and passed away very suddenly at his home in Moravia on Dec. 6, 1942, at the age of 75 years and 8 months. On Oct. 1, 1896, he was united in marriage with Miss Ora Myrtle Nowels. To this union three daughters were born, all of whom are now living. They are Mrs. Fern Handy of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Fontelle Swenson of Ottumwa, and Miss Oneita Selby, also of Los Angeles. Besides his wife and three daughters, Mr. Selby is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Diana Ashby and Mrs. Mattie Angel; one brother, John Selby; two grandsons, Waldo E. Handy and Frank Selby Handy; and two sons-in-law, Russell Swenson and Waldo Handy. Mr. Selby was a member of the Moravia Methodist Church and a life-time member of Class 9. He has served his church loyally through the years in a number of ways. He was also affiliated with the Yoeman and Woodman Lodges. His long time residence at Moravia and his years of service as a rural mail carrier have won for him a large circle of sincere friends who mourn his passing. He was a devoted husband and father.3 He was buried at Moravia Cemetery, Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa.4 He was born on April 6, 1867 at Appanoose Co., Iowa.3 He married Ora Myrtle Nowels, daughter of John Edwin Nowels and Eva Jane McKern, on October 1, 1896 at Appanoose Co., Iowa.2,3,5 Frank Selby died on December 6, 1942 at Moravia, Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 75.3

Johnson on January 23, 1919 at Chillicothe, Livingston Co., Missouri.3,6 John Edward Nowels died on June 26, 1955 at Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 72.6 He John Nowels Dies After Long Illness - John Nowels, 73, longtime Moravia resident, passed aaway Sunday, June 26, at 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph hospital in Centerville where he was taken following a stroke. He had been in failing health for many years and the past few years in a nursing home. He was born in Appanoose county, Sept. 22, 1882, the son of John and Eva McKern Nowles, [sic] and moved to Moravia Feb. 2, 1891. He was married to Eula Johnson of Lucern, Mo., about 37 years ago, who survives. A daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Saber of Des Moines, and one granddaughter, also survive. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alonzo Turner of Moravia, and Mrs. Edward George of Rialto, Calif. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Turner funeral home, Rev. John Grenfell officiating. Burial was in the Moravia cemetery. on June 30, 1955.6
