She married John Clyde McKern, son of Perry Theodore McKern and Carrie Catherine VanDoren, on February 1, 1913 at Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa.1,3,4 Zelma Josephine Kaster died on March 2, 1932 at Appanoose Co., Iowa, at age 35.2,4 She Zelma Josephine Kaster, daughter of James and Henrietta Kaster, was born July 11, 1894, and died at her home March 2, 1932, at the of of 37 years, 7 months and 21 days. She was orphaned by the loss of her mother when but a small child and was raised by an aunt, Rosa Foster, who also preceded her in death nineteen years ago. She spent one year of her life as a teacher in the public schools having taught at Darby which was at that time large enough for a two room school. She was united in marriage with Clyde McKern on February 1, 1913, and to this union were born ten children: Mrs. Ava Foster of this city, Arthur, Leah, Sylvia Pearl, Jack, Hazel, Jaquetta and Josephine, twins, and baby Lynn Hoyt, only four weeks old, at home. An infant, Edna Marie, died in infancy. Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her passing, her father; one brother, Rufus; one granddaughter, Fern Roberta Foster; her mother, five brothers and two sisters having gone on before. She was a good woman, a devoted wife and a loving mother. Her home was her kingdom. Funeral services were conducted from the Christian church in Moravia, Thursday, March 3, at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J. W. Zerbe officiating, with Rev. Robert Seath assisting. Interment was made in the Salem cemetery. on March 10, 1932.4

She is survived by one daughter, Anita Holmes of Steamboat Springs, Colo; a granddaughter, Katherine Holmes, of Steamboat Springs, Colo; three sisters Ava Foster of Ottumwa, Josephine Kennis of Bettendorf, and Jackie Morrison of Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Leah Ervin, Hazel Bethell, and Edna Mae McKern; three brothers, Bud, Jack, and Lynn Hoyt McKern; and her grandson Andrew Holmes. At her request, her body was donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held today, Tuesday, at 1 p.m. at the Lange Funeral Home. on January 16, 2007.6

She worked at the dime store and Midway Inn Grill from 1947 until John re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and they moved to Seattle. They divorced in 1952. They had one son, John Donald Hicks (Donny) born Jan. 23, 1948. After the divorce, Hazel and Donny lived in Seattle, Wash., with the E.C. Tiegs family whom Hazel worked for as a live-in housekeeper and nanny to the four Tiegs children and worked nights at the Drift Inn Bar. Hazel and Donny were beloved members of the Tiegs family and the Tiegs children kept in contact with Hazel throughout her life. Donny lost a long battle with kidney failure and preceded his mother in death on Christmas morning 1954. Hazel then married George W. Bethell in 1956. They had two children, George S. Bethell of Edgewood, Wash., and Debra Sue Reese of Fairbanks, Alaska. They lived in Seattle, Wash., until 1969 when they returned to Centerville. They divorced in 1972. Hazel worked for her sister at Pearl's Tap, from 1969 until it sold in 1991. She cared for all she served. She retired and moved to Omak, Wash., to live on her daughter Debra's ranch from 1993 to 2001. She then moved to Paullup, Wash., to be near her son, George, as Debra and family moved to Alaska. Due to her health in 2006, she then moved to her daughter, Debra's home in Fairbanks, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Donny; brothers, Jack McKern, Arthur (Bud) McKern and Lynn Hoyt McKern; sisters, Leah Ervin and Edna Mae McKern. She is survived by sisters, Ava Foster and Pearl Lamantia of Centerville, Jacquetta Morrison of Montezuma and Josephine Kennis of Bettendorf; and numerous nieces and nephews; son George S. Bethell; daughter Debra Reese and son-in-law Pat of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandsons Craven Reese of Port Orchard, Wash., and Ryan Reese of North Pole, Alaska, granddaughter Azlynn Reese of Fairbanks, Alaska and great-grandson Tyler Kelsh-Reese of Okanogan, Wash. Hazel loved to live and lived to love. Cremation and a family service was held in Fairbanks, Alaska. An Iowa family and friends service and interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Moravia, to be announced Spring of 2007. on December 21, 2006.3

Jacquetta Rose Morrison was the daughter of Clyde and Zelma Kaster McKern. She attended country grade school and graduated from Centerville High School in 1949. On June 7, 1949 she was married to Charles Morrison in Centerville. They were the parents of three children; Craig, Cindy and Christy. Following Charles' job with Hy-Vee, they purchased the Gambles Store in Montezuma in 1964. After selling the store in 1968, she went to work for Brownells, retiring after 23 years. They lived at Lake Ponderosa and Jackie loved "laklivn" and she enjoyed watching all sports, boating, golfing, bowling, cards, board games, and puzzles. Her greatest enjoyment was watching her grandchildren in high school and college athletics. Whether it was a physical injury or an injury that could be solved with her hug, Grandma was always there.
