Leah Virginia Ellison was born on April 14, 1914 at Savannah, Chatham Co., Georgia.1 As of 1939,her married name was Cole. She married John David Cole Jr., son of John David Cole and Laura Baines McCorkle, in 1939 at Greenville, Greenville Co., South Carolina. Leah Virginia Ellison died on June 25, 2015 at Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., California, at age 101.1 She Leah V. Downey, April 14, 1918 - June 25, 2015. Resident of Santa Cruz Leah Downey passed away peacefully in her sleep, in the comfort of her home. She was 97 years old. Leah was born in Savannah, Georgia, the youngest of four daughters, and spent her childhood in Asheville, North Carolina. She met the love of her life, Jim Downey, in China Lake, California when they were performing opposite each other in Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. They performed in many other plays together, harmonizing their beautiful singing voices, and fell in love. They married in 1953 and moved several times due to Jim's service in the Marines, before making their permanent home in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1963. They raised four children together. Leah worked as a secretary and was active in her community, winning several awards through her involvement in the Toastmistresses and volunteering at the Gray Bears. For many years she and Jim ran a Bed & Breakfast out of their home, which they referred to as Downeyland. She always enjoyed her role as hostess to their many out-of-town visitors, as well as friends and family, and her table settings could have been straight out of Better Homes & Gardens. She also loved tending her flowers and her koi pond, and particularly enjoyed watching the hummingbirds visit the many feeders she kept filled for them. One of her favorite sights every Spring was the mommy and daddy quails with their babies making their way through her gardens. In her spare time Leah enjoyed painting, and her artwork hangs in many places in her home and the homes of her family. She also loved animals, having raised chickens, horses, rabbits, a cow and a goat throughout the years, and always having at least one dog. Leah is survived by her husband Jim, her three children Louanne, Daryl and Rick, 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren (with one on the way), 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son David, her parents and her sisters.
