     Charles David Vaughan Charles David Vaughan, 96, died Saturday, October 17, 2015. He was born outside Ukiah, California, Charles was the third of four children. The family also live in Riverside, California, Fort Wingate and Shiprock, New Mexico where Charles, as a teenager, helped occasionally fight wildfires in northern New Mexico. The family returned to Muskogee in 1938 where Charles met and married the former Effie Hayner, and later joined the Oklahoma National Guard. On mobilization, he was assigned to the 45th Infantry Division, and served in Sicily and Italy where he earned the Purple Heart for a wound to his left arm. He was overseas for 26 months. On returning to his young family, he worked as a truck driver, and later as a bookkeeper, for several lumber companies in Oklahoma and Texas. In the sixties, Charles left bookkeeping to become a construction carpenter. Then he worked for Acme Engineering in Muskogee at his dream job of machine operator where he retired at 70. Preceded in death by Effie, Charles is survived by an older sister, Katherine Biggs of Muskogee, a younger sister, Ruth Adams and husband John of Maryneal, TX and three daughters: Sharon Roberts of Tulsa, Phyllis Ferguson of Bixby and Linda Boling of Fort Gibson. Also, surviving are seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great- great- grandchildren. Funeral services were 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Bill Crow officiating.3 He was buried at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, 1423 Cemetery Road, Fort Gibson, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma.2,3 He was born on January 25, 1919 at Ukiah, Mendocino Co., California.2 He married Effie Berniece Hayner, daughter of James William Hayner and Myrtle Maude Brandon, on April 6, 1940.1,3 Charles David Vaughan died on October 17, 2015 at Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, at age 96.2,3
