He accepted a teaching position in the Physical Education department at the time and remained there until his retirement in 1988. Thousands of Tarheel students over four decades enjoyed his popular lecture courses. From the early Sixties until the mid Seventies he served as Carolina's assistant baseball coach under his good friend Walt Rabb. Football Saturdays were always spent in Kenan Stadium where Dad worked to facilitate the concession sales. He also found time to coach many seasons in the Chapel Hill recreation department where he left a lasting impression on a generation of local kids. Dad's youth, spent largely in the Smoky Mountains hunting and fishing with numerous uncles, cousins and brothers fostered in him a lifelong love of all things outdoors. He loved to bird hunt with his buddies in the athletic department and the Rams Club. He never met a stranger, and would go fishing with anyone he could persuade to join him. Stories of missed shots or "the one that got away" made up the bulk of conversation when he met with buddies at Merritt's, Knight & Campbell or later in life, Johnny's Sporting Goods. "Doc" Lovingood was a man who was large in stature and had an even larger love of life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. We love you dad. He is survived by his wife of fifty- seven years, Sally; three sons, Joe, and wife Carol, John, and wife Mary, James, and wife Bobbi, and one daughter, Angela Robertson and her husband, Joey; six grandchildren: Brittany, Blake, Lillian.
