She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Vaughan Hardy, and brother, Preston Vaughan. Hattie Terry is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of seventy-six years, James Nelson Terry Sr. Together they set an example of a Christian marriage for their children James Nelson Terry Jr. (Vivian-deceased), Suzanne Terry Emerson (Ronnie) and Phyllis Terry McCormick (Sammy). She had a profound influence on her grandchildren: Pamela Sterusky (Mark), Teri Lane (Craig), Kyle Emerson (Michelle), Jeremy McCormick (Raven) and Reagan Boomer (Heath). She also had six step grandchildren: Sandra Vaughn (Jeffrey), Barbara Fisher (Wayne), Rhonda Taylor (Tony), Kenneth Short (Diane), Judy Short (deceased) and Ronnie Short (deceased); seven great-grandchildren: Andrew, Logan, Audrey, Abigail, Clayton, Samantha Mae and Savanna; seven step great-grandchildren: Amber, Toni Lynn, Rebecca, Wesley, C.W., Cody and Kate. She was an active member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Extension Department and a member of WMU and the Senior Loyalty Group. Hattie enjoyed being a member of the Margaret Hankins Homemakers Club and Ladies Support Group for the Keeling Fire Department. For many years Nelson's 'Dollbaby' worked side by side with him on the family farm while working the second shift at Dan River Mills and then Star Paper Tube. Her love of traveling took her to all fifty states with her husband. At the age of seventy-five she toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland with her daughter Phyllis and grandson Jeremy. Another special trip was to the Talladega Race with grandsons Kyle and Jeremy. Hattie and Nelson were avid baseball fans and were season ticket holders for the Danville Braves until their health began to decline. The family would like to express their heartfelt love and gratitude to Janet, Liz, Rebecca, and Joyce for their dedication and love as caregivers for the past several years. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence in Keeling.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, 3649 Mt. Tabor Rd., Keeling, VA 24566 (attn. Amy Alderson) or Keeling Fire Department, P.O. Davis Insurance Agency as an agent until her illness. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. On November 4, 1979, she married James Terry, Jr. who survives of the residence. In addition to her mother and husband, Mrs. Terry is survived by four daughters, Rhonda S. Taylor and husband, Tony of Amelia, Pamela T. Sterusky and husband, Mark of Charleston, S.C., Barbara S. Fisher and husband, Wayne of Volens, and Sandra S. Vaughn and husband, Jeffery of Keeling; one son, Kenneth D. Short and wife, Diane of Nathalie; six grandchildren, Amber Nicole, Toni Lynn, Rebecca Taylor, Wesley Haynes, C.W. Fisher, Jr., and Cody Vaughn; and a special friend, Sandra G. Hughes and husband, Robert. She was predeceased in death by one son, Ronnie Short; one daughter, Judy Short; and one brother, A.G. Martin. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 17, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times they will be at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is respectfully serving the Terry family. on October 19, 2009.2
