Terrill served in the United States Air Force and retired from the United States Army Reserves. He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Vigil Order of the Arrow. He was also the Assistant Cub Master of Pack 720 as well as a Boy Scout Unit Commissioner. He held his membership at Seneca Baptist Church and was the trip organizer of the Elliston Singing Eagles. Preceding him in death was his father, William Terrill Hurt Sr; mother, Laura Mayo Hurt McGinnis; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lester and Marie McLawhorn; and daughters-in-law, Lynn Smith Hurt and Lane Carpenter Hurt. His surviving family includes his wife of 44 years, Marie Carol Hurt; children, Nancy Carol Mills and husband, Hobert Mills Jr., William T. Hurt III and Robert Lester Hurt and wife, Bobbie-jo; brother, Richard Wheeler Hurt and wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Henry Lee Mills, Kyle Brandon Mills, Charles Lester Mills, Kati Emili Nicholle Hurt, and Matthew Tucker Hurt; nephew, Austin Hurt; special "son", Jon Highsmith; stepfather, Charles McGinnis; and many other family members and friends including his church family, scout family and community. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 18, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
