     Edean Sarah Brumfield was buried at Den Hill Road Cemetery, Mount Calvery Baptist Church, Rt. 641 west of Shawsville, about 3/4 mile from Rt. 11, Montgomery Co., Virginia.2 She was born on May 4, 1948 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,3 As of June 18, 1965,her married name was Rakes.1 She married Herman Columbus "H.C." Rakes Jr., son of Herman Columbus Rakes and Claud Merle "Claudie" Sowers, on June 18, 1965 at Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,2 Edean Sarah Brumfield died on September 23, 2021 at Montgomery Co., Virginia, at age 73.2 She Edean Brumfield Rakes of Shawsville, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 23, 2021. Edean was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Annie Hylton Brumfield; and the love of her life her husband, H.C. Rakes Jr. Surviving family are daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Rakes and Alex Snodgrass of Christiansburg; sons, Robert Rakes of Christiansburg, and Dale Rakes of Roanoke; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Buddy Poff of Christiansburg, and Martha and Danny Bishop of Radford; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don and Ida Rakes, Bill and Janice Rakes, Ron and Kitty Rakes, and Bruce Rakes, all of Shawsville; step-grandchildren, Trey, Jacob, and Daniel; great-granddaughter, Payton; many loving nieces and nephews; her church family at Sowders Chapel Baptist Church; and her lifelong friend, Carolyn Friend of Richmond. Edean will be remembered for her love of family, gardening and cooking, especially her cakes. She loved God, her church family and being a Sunday School teacher. Thanks to Angie, Sarah and Shannon with Good Samaritan Hospice and the Heritage Hall staff and all who made Mom's days better during her battle with ALS. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 26, 2021, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, 2021, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Lanny Belcher officiating. Interment will follow at Den Hill Cemetery, Shawsville. on September 26, 2021.2

Born on Sept. 30, 1930, in Chincoteague, he was the son of the late Lloyd J. and Elsie Bloxom Hudson. For many years he was the owner and operator of Hudsons Heating and Plumbing in Chincoteague. He retired as custodian for Chincoteague Elementary School after 14 years of service. He will be remembered for his decoy carvings, a 3rd generation carver, a grandson of the late Ira D. Hudson, a well-known Duck carver from Chincoteague. He was a past councilmen and vice-mayor for the town of Chincoteague. He was a member of Accomac Lodge #243 AF & AM, Island Commandary #34, Accomack Chapter #62 Order of Eastern Star, Chincoteague Royal Arch Chapter #75, Eastern Shore of Virginia Shrine club Khedive Temple A.A.O. N.M. S. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. He also attended Island Bapitst Church in Chincoteague. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice; two sons; two daughters; two brothers; one sister; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Daniel Joel; a brother, Jimmy Hudson; and four sisters, Ruth Hudson, Lula Singer, Pat Walker, and Betty Singer. Several Nieces and Nephews. A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at Island Baptist Church, Chincoteague. Pastor Rick Foster officiated. Interment was in the Downing Cemetery, Oak Hall. on April 1, 2008.3
