     Virginia M. "Ginny" Kidd was born on November 11, 1915 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.^3,1 As of June 15, 1935,her married name was Spangler.² She married Cecil Ray Spangler, son of Noah Conner Spangler and Valerie Ellen "Ella" Howery, on June 15, 1935 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.^1,2 Virginia M. "Ginny" Kidd died on December 28, 2005 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 90.^3,1 She On Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, Virginia M. "Ginny" Spangler died peacefully at her home on Prosperity Road following a short illness. She was in her 91st year. Born Virginia May Kidd on Nov. 11, 1915, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Elisha and Maggie Bell Stroud Kidd. Virginia spent her childhood in Beckley on Lincoln Street where she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. Known affectionately as Ginny all her life, she began a career with the C&P Telephone Company at the age of 17, earning $11 a week as a telephone operator. She was eventually promoted to chief operator, retiring in October 1983 as a traffic service advisor with 48 years, 6 months and 19 days of service. During World War II, Ginny helped establish a message center at Ashford General Hospital, now The Greenbrier, in White Sulphur Springs. Ginny was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church on Heber Street, where she sang in the choir. She played the piano and was a member of the Chaminade Music Club. She also held memberships in Beckley Woman's Club and Telephone Pioneers of America and was a charter member of the Beckley Quota Club. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Beckley barber Ray Spangler, on March 14, 1980. Survivors include three nieces, Rose Worley of Beckley, Betty Turley and husband, Buddy, of Montgomery and Dorothy McKinney of Maxwell Hill; a sister-in-law, Ruth Kidd; and several great-nieces and nephews. on January 7, 2006.¹

Mrs. Spangler was born Nov. 14, 1915, in Roanoke, Va., daughter of Joseph and Lucy Atkins. She was a homemaker and a member of Morningside Baptist Church, Columbus. Survivors include her husband, John; two sons, Waldon Phillip Spangler of Salem and Gilbert David Spangler of Riverdale, Ga; two sisters, Mae Hunter of Sinks Grove, Va., and Lillie Ruble of Virginia; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. on May 20, 1993.³

She was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church since she was age nine and a member of the King's Daughters Sunday School Class, and also the Women's Missionary Union. She received a gold certificate for voluntary work from the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association. She was an election poll worker in Vinton for many years and was a member of the Senior Citizens Group at the Vinton War Memorial. She was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ruel Mauyer Wood; four children, Brenda Hollyfield and husband, Bobby of Boonville, N.C., Donald E. Wood of Roanoke, Randal D. Wood and wife Linda of Roanoke, Alisa Wood-Walters and husband Doug of Portland, Ore; grandchildren, Matt Wood, John Wood, Paul Wood, Kimberly Wood, Rebecca Wood, Robbie Hollyfield, Ashley Hollyfield, Jacqueline Brown and Michael Brown; three great-grandchildren, Aspen, Logan, and Caleb. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004 with the Rev. Reed Ness officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Building Fund of Waverly Place Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 982-2221. on March 30, 2004.⁵

     Ruel Mauyer Wood was buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, 5737 Airport Road NW, Roanoke, Virginia.⁴ He was born on January 2, 1922 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^1,2,6 He married Geneva Frances Carter, daughter of John Roy Carter and Lura Mary Spradlin, on April 6, 1946 at Roanoke, Virginia.^1,4,5 Ruel Mauyer Wood died on August 5, 2009 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 87.^3,6,4 He Ruel Mauyer Wood, 87, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009. He was a veteran of World War II in the first Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He participated in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy and was awarded a bronze star and a purple heart. Mr. Wood was employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He was also a lifetime member of Waverly Place Baptist Church and was a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Carter Wood; and also two sisters, Glendola and Versie. Surviving is a sister, Eleanor Newcomb, of Norfolk; four children, Brenda Hollyfield and husband, Bobby, Booneville, N.C., Donald Wood, Roanoke, Randal Wood and wife, Linda, Roanoke, and Alisa Wood-Walters and husband, Doug, Portland, Oregon; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The Wood family would like to thank the staff at the Virginia Veterans Care Center and also at the VA Medical Center for the excellent care their dad received over the past several years. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Burial to follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
