He is survived by his loving wife, Lennis Arene Pickerel of 61 years. Also, his grandson, Jesse and wife, Chelsey Pickerel; granddaughter, Shannon and husband, Stephen Brockway; daughter-in-law, Glenda Pickeral; great-grandchildren, Zecharaiah and Maggie Pickerel; and brothers, Alvin and wife, Bernice Pickerel and Crystal Ellison and Kevin Pickerel. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Ella and William Pickerel; sister, Madeline Beasley; brothers, Beverage and Curtis Handy; and son, Darrell Glenn Pickerel. Glenn was born on March 6, 1934, in Stuart, to Ella and William Pickerel. He married Lennis Arene Via on December 24, 1954, and welcomed son, Darrell Glenn Pickerel on September 18, 1956. Glenn was an accomplished business man working in management with Pulaski Furniture Company for 32 years before retiring in 2000. He was also an active Deacon at Memorial Baptist Church in Pulaski for many years, as well as an avid hunter and loved being outdoors. His grandchildren remember him as a kind and fun-loving grandfather who always encouraged and loved them dearly. Although, his time with his great-grandson, Zechariah was short, they had a bond that was unexplainable. Family will receive friends at Memorial Baptist Church in Pulaski, Virginia on Monday, January 18, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at 11 a.m. from the Memorial Baptist Church, Pulaski with the Rev. Michael Jones officiating. A Graveside service will be held at Woolwine United Methodist Church in Woolwine, Va. At 2 p.m. following the funeral service. Burial will follow in the Woolwine Cemetery. Following the graveside service the family will be in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to Memorial Baptist Church. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Pulaski, Va; he graduated from Radford University with a B.S. degree and was an office manager for Corning Cable Systems in Winston Salem. Mr. Pickerel was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; Jesse and Nannie Lou Via and his paternal grandparents; William and Ella Pickerel. In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife of 20 years, Glenda Rorrer Pickerel, a daughter; Shannon Pickerel, and a son; Jesse Pickerel. Funeral services for Mr. Pickerel will be at 2:00 PM on Monday October 20, 2008 at Woolwine United Methodist with Pastor Jack Hyde and Pastor David Lones officiating, burial will be at Woolwine Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart and other times at the home place in Woolwine. She was born on April 29, 1946, in Montgomery County. She was a graduate of Christiansburg High School. She is preceded in death by her father, Oscar "Ott" St. Clair; mother, Myrtle St. Clair (Hylton); sister, Doris Jean St. Clair; and brothers-in-law, Bill Wright and H.C. Rakes. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Danny Bruce Rakes; their two sons, Daniel Rakes and Joe Rakes (Daphne); sisters, Neda Rook (Aubry), Ruby Wright, and Nancy Buckland (Donnie); brothers, Roger St. Clair (Carol), and Raymond St. Clair (Helen); brother and sisters-in-law, Ron and Kitty Rakes, and Eden Rakes; grandchildren, Raymond (Amanda), Danielle, Erika, Dustin, and Natalie; special uncle, Joe Sowers; many cousins, many nieces and nephews; special niece, Doris Dickerson; and special nephew, Butch Wright. The family would like to thank special friend Lita King. Sally was a member and treasurer of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, leading Christmas shoe boxes, Thanksgiving boxes, Vacation Bible School and more. She was a wonderful homemaker, caring for her two sons and playing an active role in all their extracurriculars as they grew up, including pack leader of Cub Scout Pack #277, and ran concessions at the school. She then took on the role of grandmother and loved her grandchildren more than life itself. She is a cancer survivor. on January 2, 2020.2

Rakes Jr. died on January 14, 2017 at Virginia at age 76.1 He Herman C. Rakes Jr., of Shawsville passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017. H.C. owned and operated H.C. Rakes Jr. Hauling. He grew up farming and continued to enjoy that throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Edean Rakes; parents, Herman C. Rakes, Sr. and Merle Rakes sons, Robert Rakes and Rebecca, and Dales Rakes; daughter, Sandra Rakes and husband, Alex Snodgrass; grandchildren, Trey, Jacob and Daniel; brothers, Don and Ida , Bill and Janice, Bruce and Sally, Ron and Kitty Rakes; sisters-in-law, Frances and Buddy Poff, Martha and Danny Bishop; and special friends, Bill and David Ryan. Special thanks to Blue Ridge Cancer Center and Dr. Rotchie and Good Samaritan Hospice. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Horne Funeral Home.
