Survivors include his father, Kevin, mother, Tina; grandparents, Roger and Kathy Bingham of Chariton, Barb and Dave Williams of Lovilia, and Lyle Smith of Denver, Colo; great-grandparents, Leo and Emma Duree of Chariton, Raymond and Evelene Bingham of Chariton, Arthur and Juanita Swayne of Knoxville and Norma Williams of Lovilia. Services were held July 8 at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton with the Rev. Father Allan Stetz conducting and burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. on July 9, 1996.1

Warren Joseph Smith Warren Joseph Smith, son of Warren Wesley Smith and Margaret Laurene Duree Smith, was born Nov. 6, 1948, in Osceola and died Dec. 28, 2001, at his rural home in Derby following an extended illness. He was 53. Mr. Smith was raised on the family farm in Clarke, Wayne and Decatur Counties. He graduated from Mormon Trail Community School in 1968. He married Sandra Marie Collins Sept. 18, 1971, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. They became the parents of three children, Karri Jo, Jason and David. Mr. and Mrs. Smith made their home in the Derby area. He farmed and prior to his death was employed at the HyVee Warehouse in Produce and MFA. Mr. Smith enjoyed his work and being with people. He made any actvity fun, his jokes and pranks were enjoyed by all. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He deeply regretted his illness prevented him from Helping fellow neighbors with their projects. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. He loved being Papa Joe to his three grandchildren. Mr. Smith was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Francis and Juanita Collins, sister-in-law, Rosemary Celander and nephews, Randy Smith and Frank Uthe. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife; a daughter, Karri Jo Briggs and her husband, Kevin Briggs, of Russell; two sons, Jason Smith and his wife, Shonna Smith, of Lineville and David Smith at home in Derby and his special friend, Amanda Cooper; three grandchildren, Madison and Chandler Briggs of Russell and Logan Smith of Lineville; two sisters Connie Glenn and her husband, Larry Glenn, of Osceola and Rita Audlehelm and her husband, Gary Audlehelm of Van Wert; two brothers, Mike Smith and his wife, Sherri Smith, of Allerton and Steve Smith and his wife, Judy Smith, of Weldon; as well as other family and a host of friends. A funeral Mass for Mr. Smith was Dec. 31 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton, the Rev. Father Bill Miller, C.P.P.S. Chariton, officiating. Vocalist Dennis Storm sang the musical selections, Love Me and Angels Among Us. Casket bearers were Frank Baker, Greg Gwinn, Ron Fouche, Gene Shanks, Dan Kent and Denny Rankin. Honorary bearers were Madison Briggs, Chandler Briggs, Logan Smith, Butch Glenn, Chris Smith, Joe Audlehelm, Creighton Smith, Kevin Hall, Russell Turner, Craig Stephenson, Mark Colton and Chase Dawkins. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Woodburn. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
