She died about 5 p.m. in surgery at Lewis-Gale Hospital from what Dr. Charles M. Irvin, Roanoke city medical examiner, said was a cardiac arrest. Primary cause of death however was a ruptured spleen and resultant hemorrhage, Dr. Irvin said. She became Roanoke’s first traffic fatality of the new year. Dr. Irvin said surgeons massaged Mrs. Hepler’s heart and restored its action two or three times but the heart-beat finally ceased. Mrs. Hepler was a passenger in a car driven by Harry P. Hash, 50, of the 900 block of Bridge street, SW. Police said Hash was driving westward on Orange avenue, NE, and making a left turn into Ninth street. His vehicle was hit in the side by an eastbound automobile driven by Fred E. Dooley, 23, of Villamont. Hash and Dooley have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and released on bond for their appearance in Municipal Court Jan. 29. Hospital records showed that Mrs. Hepler was examined in the emergency department at Lewis-Gale. Examination disclosed a fractured rib and bruised shoulder, Dr. Irvin said. There was nothing to indicate any need for hospitalization he said, adding that Mrs. Hepler was not in shock. He said it appeared the hemorrhage from the spleen was slow. She left the hospital after emergency treatment. She was returned to the hospital about 4 p.m. yesterday. As soon as her injury was diagnosed she was taken to surgery. Mrs. Hepler is survived by four sons, James E. Hepler, Slagle, W.Va; Winfred P. Hepler, Sunbeam, W.Va; Richard L. and Carl Hepler, both of Roanoke; her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Bowyer, Roanoke; two brothers, Robert D. and Howard M. Martin, both of Roanoke; and five grandchildren. She was the widow of Lewis Hepler. Interment will be in Sherwood. on June 21, 1958.⁴

He was Co-Director of the Colonial Theater Board of William Fleming High School. He has been a Co-President of five Roanoke City PTA's and currently serving on the Central Council PTA's Audit Committee. Al had retired from Roanoke City Communications 911 Center as Supervisor for 30+ years after beginning as a police officer. He served his country in the United States Air Force. Al was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Fran Martin; and his two daughters and sons-in-law, Aldene M. Dyer and Scott C. Dyer, and Anette M. Lloyd and Mark A. Lloyd. He also leaves behind his granddaughter, Iris A. Dyer, whom he loved and adored; his grandson to be; and his loving dog, Alex. Al also leaves behind his mom, Reba McCraw; brothers, Kenneth McCraw Jr. and Michael McCraw; sister, Debbie Avis; his sister, Patsy Grey; his brother, Clarence Martin; along with many other dear family and friends.
