Raymond Ernest "Ray" Woodard Raymond Earnest "Ray" Woodard - He was the son of Raymond and Lou Gardner Woodard. Ray grew up in Checotah where he attended Punkin Ridge School. In 1943 he moved to California where he began working for Standard Oil Company. He met, fell in love and later married Sylvie Agnes Linn on Friday July 22, 1960 in Bakersfield, California. Ray continued to work for Standard Oil Company, retiring after 32 years in July 1975 as a Production Mechanic. Later that year, they moved back to this area where they built a home in Rentiesville where they raised cattle, horses, and all other farm animals. He enjoyed raising a vegetable garden and would raise watermelons that would weigh 50 lbs. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with their friends. They loved to travel. Ray was a member of the First Baptist Church of Checotah. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Raymond and Lou Woodard; Step-children, James Thomas Van Zandt and Evelyn Virginia Ussery; Daughters-in-law Janet Woodard and Naomi Van Zandt. Ray is lovingly survived by his wife Sylvie, of the home; Children, James Woodard and his wife Betty, John Woodard and wife Cynthia Lan, Bill Woodard and Brenda Perry and her husband Raymond; One step-son-in-law, Lloyd Ussery all of California; His Sister, Judy Wood of Colorado; 14 Grandchildren, 15 Great-grandchildren and 4 Great-great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at First Free Will Baptist Church of Checotah with Reverend Larry Montgomery, officiating. Clinton Foster, Jason Combs, Gary Baughman, Kevin Ledbetter, Ronnie Brinsfield, Mark Gately, Walter Jernigan and Bill Buckmaster will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers. The family of Ray Woodard entrusted his care and cremation to Garrett Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service.1 He married Florine Ann Jernigan, daughter of Robert D. "Bob" Jernigan and Hemma "Emma" Slape.2 Raymond Ernest "Ray" Woodard was born on January 24, 1918 at Checotah, McIntosh Co., Oklahoma.2,3 He died on April 1, 2009 at Checotah, McIntosh Co., Oklahoma, at age 91.2,3

He was born on Sunday, December 7, 1924 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Robert and Emma Slape Jernigan. He grew up in the Pumpkin Ridge area where he received his education. Orville moved to the Bakersfield, California area in 1943 where he worked as a Mechanic. He met, fell in love and later married Madeline Marie Cole on Monday, February 18, 1946 in Bakersfield, CA. Orville surrendered to the call of God on his life to preach. He began preaching in the Pentecostal Holiness Churches. He pastored many church, retiring in 1980. Orville moved back to Muskogee in 1993 to be near his family. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Robert & Emma Jernigan; his Wife, Madeline Jernigan; and a Sister, Ann Woodard. He lovingly survived by his Children, Robert Jernigan & Shirley Jernigan; Three Grandchildren, Jason Jernigan, Jeremy Jernigan, Joshua Jernigan and his wife Kim; Five Great-grandchildren, Gavin Jernigan, Deegan Jernigan, Kale Jernigan, Devon Walker, & Logan Jernigan all of Muskogee, Oklahoma. Also surviving is his Sister, Bobbie Jo Payton and her husband Lee of Ft. Smith, AR. & Two Brothers, Virgil Jernigan, of Muskogee, OK., and Walter Jernigan and his wife Maxine of Wagoner, Oklahoma. Funeral Services will be 1:oo PM Tueday, June 30, 2009 at First Free Will Baptist Church, Checotah with Reverend Larry Montgomery, officiating.
