John Douglas West Mr. John Douglas “John D” West, age 85 of Stuart passed away Sept. 21, 2010 at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. He was born on Jan. 13, 1925 in Mt. Airy, NC to the late J.J. West and Louisa Coles West. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Ligon West; a sister, Mary Lee West Hudgins; and a brother, Edward Coles West. After graduating from Stuart High School he served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator aboard the USS Ramey, a destroyer in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Following the war he graduated from Emory and Henry College. A lifelong and devoted member of United Methodist Churches in Clarksville and Stuart, he served in various committees, men’s groups, and choirs. His interests included gardening, hunting, and the outdoors generally. A warm and unpretentious person, his unflagging good humor was a defining characteristic. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Service West of the home; two sons, John Bryant of Oakland Park, FL, Douglas Timothy West of Blairs; eleven grandchildren, Joshua Bryant, Terra Bryant, Amber West, Sarah Jane West, Jonathon West, Franklin Service, Jordan Service, Shira Service, Joelle Service, Talia Service, Katie Lewis; three great grandchildren, Matthew Garner, Wyatt Garner, Abigail Lewis; one sister, Ann West Hale of Stuart; one brother, William J. West of Penhook; a sister in law, Peggy Soyars Thomas of Mt. Airy, NC; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Daisy. Funeral services will be held Sat., Sept. 25, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Stuart United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Shepherd officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC, 27017 or to the Stuart United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 946, Stuart, VA 24171. "Boaty" Hudgins III of Stuart; six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ann Hale of Stuart; two brothers, John Douglas West of Clarksville and William Jefferson "Bill" West of Altavista. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Robert Thorne officiating. Interment will follow in Stuart Cemetery. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee West Hudgins, his stepmother, Olive Ellett Hinton Hudgins; a sister, Ruby Lee Ashing; and a brother, Lester Hudgins. Hudgins graduated from Virginia Tech and worked for the state Health Department as a sanitarian. He belonged to the Stuart Lions Club, the Rotary and Floyd Country Club. He held a lifetime membership in the Patrick County Jaycees, and he belonged to the Stuart United Methodist Church. Hudgins also had served in the Navy. Surviving are five sons, Lee W. Hudgins and R.B. Hudgins III, both of Stuart, Doug Elder of Forest, John Elder of Fairfax and Robert Elder of Tampa, Fla; and six grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moody's Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Clyde DeLoach. Burial will be in Stuart cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Patrick County Veteran's Memorial Honor Guard.
