Gary Leon Showalter Gary Leon Showalter, age 77, formerly of Iron Gate, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in The Glebe, Daleville, Virginia on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. Gary was born August 4, 1943 to the late Charlie and Edith Showalter. He grew up in Iron Gate and Selma, Virginia. He was a graduate of Central High School and served in the United States Air Force from 1960 - 1965, stationed in Turkey and England. He retired from MeadWestvaco after 43 years of dedicated service. Gary also served his community as a member of the Iron Gate Volunteer Fire Dept. and as a Deacon at Clifton Forge Baptist Church, where he was a long-standing member. He also shared his faith through his love of singing, as a member of The Messengers Trio and The Cardinal State Quartet. In his free time, Gary enjoyed a variety of activities including hunting, fishing, golfing, cooking and reading, all of which he passed on to his children. In addition to his parents, Charlie Paul Showalter and Edith Mae Helmintoller Showalter Cole, Gary was preceded in death by brothers, Charlie Paul "C.P." Showalter and Louis "Punky" Ross Showalter, and special aunt, Sarah "Blackie" Payne. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Jean Wright Showalter; a son, Paul Howard Showalter of Williamsburg; a daughter, Erin Elizabeth Showalter-Nicely and husband, Hiawatha "Casey" Nicely of Bonsack; one amazing grandson, Wyatt Hudson Nicely; and special friends, Steve Jones of Potts Creek and Ronald "Ronnie" Wright of Eagle Rock. A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in Eagle Rock Baptist Cemetery, Eagle Rock, with Reverend Dr. Tom Harvey officiating.5 He was buried at Eagle Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, State Road 734, Eagle Rock, Botetourt Co., Virginia.5 He was born on August 4, 1943 at Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., Virginia.2,3,5 He married Barbara Jean Wright on July 15, 1967 at Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., Virginia.3,4,5 Gary Leon Showalter died on October 28, 2020 at Daleville, Botetourt Co., Virginia, at age 77.5

Barbara Jean Wright Barbara Jean Wright Showalter, age 75, formerly of Clifton Forge, Virginia passed away at her home in The Glebe, Daleville, Virginia on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. She was born September 7, 1946 in Clifton Forge to the late Howard Westley Wright and Thelma Viola Zell Wright. She was a retired Registered Nurse for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital, Alleghany Regional Hospital, and Community Hospital of Roanoke. She was a longtime member of Clifton Forge Baptist Church. Barbara loved nursing and caring for patients and friends when they needed support. She enjoyed mentoring nurses just beginning their careers and was often recognized for her skill and compassionate manner. Barbara loved being home with her family. She could often be found feeding the local wildlife from her deck, napping with her cat, or being the official taste-tester for anything her husband cooked. Barbara loved classical music and as her memory began to slip away, it was something that brought her great peace. Barbara will be remembered by those who knew her as someone who believed the best in people, someone who loved animals and who thought there was no place more beautiful than South West Virginia. She was so proud of her children and believed her only grandchild, Wyatt, was one of her greatest blessings. She cherished the title of “Grammy”. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gary Leon Showalter; and three brothers, Howard E. “Bud” Wright, Ray M. Wright, and Donald Wayne Wright. he is survived by a daughter, Erin Elizabeth Showalter-Nicely and husband, Hiawatha “Casey” Nicely of Bonsack; a son, Paul Howard Showalter of Williamsburg; a sister, Aileen W. Painter of Virginia Beach; a brother, Ronald W. Wright of Clifton Forge; one amazing grandson, Wyatt Hudson Nicely; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the amazing caregiving staff at The Glebe’s Chaplick Memorial Center for their steadfast dedication to Barbara as her memories faded. Also, they wish to thank the Good Samaritan Hospice team for giving Barbara such tender and respectful care in her last days.
