A native of Roanoke, he had been a Peninsula resident for 55 years. After serving for 35 years between the Navy, Naval Reserve and Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, William retired in 1983. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association and had also served as Scout Master for Troop #57 of the Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include three sons, Ralph Thurman and his wife, Jenny, Michael Thurman, and Gary Thurman and his wife, Patty; three grandchildren, Carrie Anderson and her husband, Mike, Amanda Morrisette and her husband, Rob, and Ryan Thurman; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Nicole Anderson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Thurman, and one son, William Franklin Thurman. A visitation will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be held immediately following at 6 p.m. with the Monsignor Michael D. McCarron officiating. Family and friends will gather at 8:30 a.m. at the church on Tuesday, Dec. 23, to go to Hampton Memorial Gardens Cemetery for burial at 9 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 100 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601. He was a native of Salem, Va. and a Peninsula resident for 48 years. Mr. Richards retired as a senior lab technician after 35 years with Newport News Shipbuilding. He attended Danville Military School and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, served in the 8th Air Corps, London, England. Honorably discharged in 1945, he settled in Hampton as an assistant maintenance foreman, Coats & Clark (zipper div.) until his employment at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1954. He served as cubmaster pack 55, Buckroe Baptist Church, cubmaster pack 53, Jane H. Bryan School; assistant scoutmaster troop 29, First Presbyterian Church, Hampton, and scoutmaster troop 38, Buckroe Methodist Church. On the adult level he served as adult training chairman, chairman eastern district expedition committee, assistant scoutmaster 1964, national jamboree Valley Forge, eastern district commissioner. He obtained while in scouting: ordel, brotherhood and vigil levels in the order of the arrow Kecoughtan lodge and the highest adult volunteer award presented in scouting the "Silver Beaver." He was co-founder, director and instructor of the Tidewater Musketeer Jr. Rifle Club, life member N.R.A., National American Legion Post 0141 and VFW Post 3219. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gill Richards, a daughter, Gillian Richards Green, Midlothian, Va; a son, Lee Ernest Richards, Hampton; 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home. Memorial service 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by Rev. Marion Paul White. Burial in Veteran's Memorial Gardens. on March 28, 1994.2
