In 1971, Bernard entered the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his retirement in 1992. For his faithful service, he earned several awards and commendations; some of which include: Army Commendation Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze Service Star, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (5), and Expert Rifleman Badge, M16. He had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. While serving in the military, Bernard met a young lady by the name of Mi Yon Kim. They were united in marriage on March 18, 1980 in Ft. Belvoir, Maryland. They shared over 40 years of marriage together and were blessed with three children: Joseph, Kimberly, and James. After retiring from the military, Bernard was able to do more of the things that he enjoyed. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends, watching Washington Redskins football and St. Louis Cardinal Baseball. You could frequently find him enjoying breakfast at the West Side Café or Cracker Barrel or spending time at the American Legion. He was a very caring person and enjoyed taking care of the people he cared most about. Most importantly, he loved his family tremendously. He also loved spending time with them, especially the grandchildren. Bernard passed away Thursday, November 5, 2020 in the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri having attained the age of 69 years. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him. Bernard leaves to cherish his memory, his wife: Mi Yon Easton of Waynesville, MO; two sons: Joseph Easton (Sara) of Graham, WA, and James Easton (Kelly) of Walton, KY; three grandchildren: Isabelle, Abigail, and Logan Easton; other relatives and friends. Andy was the youngest child born to Curry “Doc” and Bertha Thorne in Dorcas, West Virginia on June 13th, 1941. His “younger years” weren’t perfect, but they gave him a powerful testimony after his life-altering encounter with the living God. And when he met his late wife, Shirley, on a blind date, he knew she was the one God had for him. Although Andy didn’t have a stellar education and could barely read at a 3rd grade level, he could always be found reading his favorite book, the Bible. He has instilled that love of the Lord and His Word in his son and daughter. Andy was a talented truck driver for his career and never shied away from hard work. But it was his light, laugh, and smile that will be missed by all that knew him. Andy was burdened by a calling to pray for Israel, Haiti, and Africa later in life and was a prayer warrior even when Alzheimer’s began to take his memory. Andy is preceded in death by his wife, mother and father, brother Richard, and sister Pauline. He is survived by his son, Brian and daughter-in-law Faith; daughter, Katherine and son-in-law Michael; spiritual daughter, Stefanie and spiritual son, Danny; grandchildren, Stephan, Alicen, Robert, Andrew, Maliki, Zachary, Aliyah, and Ethan; great-granddaughter, JuJu; sisters, Mary and Betty; and countless nieces, nephews, and friends.² He was born on June 13, 1941 at West Virginia.^1,2 He married Shirley Ora Burnley, daughter of Clyde Ernest Burnley and Ora Ida Tyler, on June 16, 1977 at Springfield, Fairfax Co., Virginia.¹ Andrew William Thorne died on August 20, 2021 at North Carolina at age 80.²
