He was retired from Superior Carriers and was a member of Hollins Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Luther Cannaday, Sr. and Elsie Virginia Cannaday Goins. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Kathryn S. Cannaday; four children and spouses, Douglas (Malinda) Cannaday of Cedar Bluff, Darrell (Elsie) Cannaday, Brenda (Mickey) Bowman, Missy (Mike) Henritze, all of Roanoke; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakeys Vinton Chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007 with Minister Jim Morris officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Vinton First Aid Crew, c/o P.O. Box 314, Vinton, Va. 24179. The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Oakeys Vinton Chapel, 982-2221. on May 2, 2007.2

Cannaday, 82, of Vinton, Va., and formerly of West Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Thomas L. Cannaday Jr; parents, Londa and Texie Sweeney; brothers, John and George Sweeney; and sister, Versie Brammer, of West Virginia. She is survived by sons, Douglas (Malinda) Cannaday, of Cedar Bluff, and Darrell (Elsie) Cannaday, of Roanoke; daughters, Brenda (Mickey) Bowman, of Roanoke, and Michelle "Missy" (Mike) Henritze, of Vinton; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dora Bryant, Ellen Cole, and Ferne Meadows, all of West Virginia, and Maxine Lilly, of Maryland; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family; and faithful loving cats, Bug and Sock. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Chips Doyle officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221. on July 2, 2010.1

He was preceded in death by his father, John Elwood Cannaday; his mother, Emelene Hale Frye; stepfather, Leonard Oliver Frye; a son, Daniel Bryan Cannaday of Selma, Ala; and two uncles, Stan Cannaday and Nelson Thomas. He is survived by a son, Lt. Col. John E. Cannaday, III, USAF; a daughter-in-law, Louie; and grandchildren, Daniel, Patricia, and Kara Drake, of Colorado Springs, Colo; sister, Imojean Martin, Roanoke; and nieces and nephews, Eddie and Dawn Stanley, Bill and Martha Martin; sister, Lynette G. Frye, Roanoke; aunt, Manila Cannaday, Roanoke; and cousins, Iva and John Ferguson; aunt, Edna Thomas of Roanoke; and cousins, Larry and Sue Thomas and Susie and Forrest Campbell. John had a B.S. degree in Engineering from Virginia Tech, M.S. in Materials Science from Air Force Institution of Technology in Montgomery, Ala., and M.S. in Business Administration from Auburn University. John retired from the Air Force after 28 years as a pilot and instructor. He moved to Salem to be with his family in 1986 where he taught mathematics and materials science at the Governors School for 13 years. During his teaching in Roanoke City Schools, he received the Virginia Outstanding Mathematics Teacher of the Year Award in 1993 and established the program for materials science. In his memory, the school's educational foundation has established a memorial fund. Donations may be provided to the Governor's School in his name. He was loved by many and will be sadly missed. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2001, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Ken W. Nienke officiating. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will provide the Military Honors. The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. on August 9, 2001.2
