He is survived by his wife, Hilda R. Slone; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Slone and Harry M. Lacy Jefferson Slone, 84, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Born and raised in Franklin County, Va., Lacy graduated from Roanoke College as a Senior Scholar. His desire to see the world led him to enlist with the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Waco, Texas and London, England. Upon returning home, Lacy went to work for Steel Services, Inc., retiring after 40 years as President of the company. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Lacy was preceded in death by his grandson, John Burton Slone; parents, Elton A. Slone and Blanche Slone Wade; brother, Wilton Slone; and sisters, Marie Dod and Nellie Painter. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Corenne Mills Slone; sons and daughters-in-law, Ambrose and Rebecca Slone and John and Lorraine Slone; grandchildren, Grace, Katherine, Lacey, and Karoline Slone; brothers, Ralph Slone and E. Ray Slone (Betsy) Slone; sisters, Elsie McKnight and Susie (Tom) Dod; and sister-in-law, Hilda Robers. Lacy embodied the best of qualities, unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that could be seen in his care of his wife, sons, and family. He was greatly admired by those that knew and loved him and will be profoundly missed. Interment will be immediately following the funeral service at Franklin Memorial Park. on May 15, 2024.2

Vest. She is survived by her sisters, Ruth V. Ingram, Marie V. Thomas (Bill); brothers, Paul L. Vest, Charles W. Vest (Loretta P.), James B. Vest (Katie S.); sister-in-law, Evelyn H. Janney. In addition to her siblings she loved and was loved and adored by numerous nieces, nephews, great -nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a graduate of Check High School. She was a long time employee of an overall factory later known as Imperial Reading. She was a vital part of the payroll department and the last employee to leave when the factory closed. There is no way to express what a wonderful person she was, very loving, kind and giving. She made and gave away many afghans and was also known for her pound cakes and green beans. The Interment will follow at the Stonewall Cemetery. on June 21, 2022.5

David was hired by Trailways at the age of 21 in Charlottesville, VA. In 1966 David moved back to Check, VA to live and farm while always working as a driver. David retired from Greyhound after 50 years of driving service. David loved Floyd County and Farming. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife: Anne Burns Vest; daughter: Kathy Walters and a brother: Kyle Vest. David is survived by wife: Darla Thoman Vest; son: Danny (Trish) Vest; daughter: Kim (Timmy) Turman; step-daughter: Carla Ciaramella; step-son: John Tomi; Five Grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers: Ralph Vest, Charles (Loretta) Vest, Paul (Penny) Vest, James (Katie) Vest; sisters: Dorothy Janney, Marie (Bill) Thomas, Ruth Anne (Elvin) Ingram; mother-in-law: Dorothea Thoman; brother-in-law: Tom (Cindy) Thoman; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 AM at Stonewall Church of the Brethren with Rev. Jerry Hylton officiating. Interment will follow in Stonewall Cemetery where David will be transported by wagon and tractor to be laid to rest beside of his 1st wife Anne. Family will receive friends one hour before service time and after the interment at the church.      Grace Louise DeLong was born on March 8, 1926 at Moneta, Bedford Co., Virginia.2 As of August 19, 1950,her married name was Vest.3 She married Kyle Allen Vest, son of Morris Allen Vest and Ida Mae Cannaday, on August 19, 1950 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,3 Grace Louise DeLong died on December 3, 2016 at Virginia at age 90.2 She Grace D. Vest, 90, of Roanoke, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 3, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Kyle A. Vest. Born on March 8, 1926, in Moneta, Va., she was the daughter of the late James L. Delong and Sally Wright Delong. Grace was the youngest of nine children. She worked many years for Woolworth until the store closed its doors in 1993. Grace was also a dedicated member of Forest Park Baptist Church for 35 years and attended regularly until her health prevented her from attending. Those left cherish her memory are her two sons, Allen Vest and James Vest, both of Roanoke, Va; four brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law, all of Virginia; and a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Forest Park Baptist with Pastor Rayshon Cobbs Sr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made in Grace's memory to the Forest Park Baptist Church, P.O. Box 6275, Roanoke, VA 24017-0275. on December 8, 2016.2

He was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed farming and caring for his cattle. Thurman was a member of the Stonewall Church of the Brethren. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy V. Janney; sister, Lelia J. Huff; brother-in-law, King S. Murphy Jr; sisters-in-law, Helen M. Janney and Evelyn H. Janney; other in-laws, Ralph Vest, David and Darla Vest, Paul and Penny Vest, Charles and Loretta Vest, James and Katie Vest, Ruth and Elvin Ingram, Marie and Bill Thomas and Grace Vest. He was a special uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday October 28, 2014 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jerry Hylton and Pastor Darren Landon officiating. The interment will follow at the Stonewall Cemetery. Flag presentaion by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kyle A. Vest and Grace D. Vest. He is survived by a brother, Allen Dale Vest of Roanoke; three aunts and three uncles: Dorothy Janney, Ruth V. Ingram (Elvin), Marie V. Thomas (Bill) of Floyd, Paul L Vest (Penny) of Christiansburg, Charles W. Vest (Loretta) of Pilot, and James B. Vest (Katie) of Copper Hill. Also, surviving James are numerous cousins; and a special friend, Teresa Verell. James was a friend to all who knew him and was always in the company of his very special four-legged friend, Sandy, whom he truly cherished. A memorial service to celebrate James' life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Forest Park Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forest Park Baptist Church. on June 21, 2017.4

He was born July 4, 1913, in Hillsville, Virginia. A World War II veteran, he had worked at the Radford Arsenal and was a retired pipe fitter with the Plumbers & Pipe fitters Union, Local 491, Roanoke, Va. He was a member of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren, McDaniel Lodge # 86 A.F. & A.M, and the Montgomery County Democratic Party. Ashley was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin Douglas and Mary Ellen Staples; his brothers, Harry Staples and Edward Staples; and his sisters, Maude Worrell, Marjorie Malloy, Ruby Baker and Fannie Ward. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alverta Cannaday Staples; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Douglas Gray of Hampton, Va; a granddaughter and her husband, Angela and J.R. Gilley; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Ryan of Hampton, Va; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren conducted by the Rev. Don Peters. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by McDaniel Lodge # 86.
