Hopkins Sr., 72, of Croydon, a retired heavy equipment operator who had been fire chief and fire marshal, died Wednesday at Delaware Valley Medical Center in Falls Township. Mr. Hopkins was born and educated in Bensalem and during World War II served with the Navy Seabees (Construction Battalion), building landing strips in the South Pacific. He had resided in Croydon for 40 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Operating Engineers Union and operated heavy equipment until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Hopkins was a lifelong member of Croydon Fire Company No. 1, which he had served as chief, and was a former fire marshal for Bristol Township. He was a member of the Bucks County Fire Chiefs Association and had helped found the Bucks County Fire School. His wife of more than 30 years, Ruth M. Hopkins, died in 1982. He is survived by daughters Joyce Mild, Betty Wojnar, Gail Nevel, Susan Bellerby, Lisa Gibson, Nancy and Sandy; sons Raymond B. Jr., Kenny and Horace; two sisters; 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in Bristol Cemetery, Bristol Pike (Route 13) and Route 413, Croydon. on April 9, 1996.8
