Thienel and wife Julie; grandchildren Christopher Thienel , Julia A., and husband James Fletcher, Stacey, and her husband James Pelter; and great-grandchildren Emily Fletcher, Elaina Fletcher, James Pelter, II, Joshua Thienel and Kyle Thienel ; and his sisters, Clotilde M. Boeckel, Friendswood, Texas, Dorothy Thienel , Reno, Nev., and Gloria Elliott, and her sons, Christy R. and Steven D., Reno, Nev. Phillip M. Thienel served for five years in the Army in World War II. He participated in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. After World War II he continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve. He served on active duty in Korean and Berlin conflicts. He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Air Force commendation medal. As a civil service career employee he served the Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, Va. and the U.S. Office of Education in Washington, DC. As a free-lance writer he wrote extensively on the role of the Corps of Engineer in the Civil War, 1861-1865.He was a member of the B.P.O.E., Lodge 2108, Pensacola, Fla. and A.F. & A.M. Herndon Lodge 264, and Liberty Lodge 95, Bedford, Va. O.E.S. Chapter 109, Bedford, Va. Private graveside services will follow in the Elks National Home Cemetery with Liberty Mason Lodge #95 officiating. on January 7, 2006.6
