Mrs. Courter, a homemaker, was born in Ridgeway. On May 13, 1939, she married Charles H. Courter. He died on May 26, 1999. Mrs. Courter was also preceded in death by a brother, P.R. "Skinny" Hansell; and two sisters, Claudine Hansell and Velma Courter. Survivors include a son, Max Courter, Coffey; a daughter, Peggy Heldenbrand, Bethany; a sister, Voncille Utterback, Gallatin; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and several step great- grandchildren.

A graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, VA, she attended Roanoke College. Prior to her marriage, she was the secretary to the president of WDBJ Television in Roanoke, VA. Upon her marriage to Bobby, she moved to Winston-Salem and later joined him in his business, Herring Decorating, Inc.. She participated in the business affairs and later became an officer and interior designer with the firm. She was the owner of Herlee, Inc., a sister company to Herring Decorating, Inc. She was a woman's minority owner of the company which did roofing and insulation in several states. She was a member of First Christian Church. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park. We extend our thanks to Renee Soper, Ruth's caregiver; Virginia Cuthrell; and the staff at Wake Forest Medical Center for their services to Ruth. on November 3, 2010.2

     Bobby Joe "Bob" Herring Bobby Joe Herring, age 89, of Winston-Salem died on July 26, 2017 peacefully in his home. He was the only child of Benson H. Herring and Etta Reynolds Herring. Mr. Herring was born in Winston-Salem on Labor Day, September 5, 1927. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 43 years, Ruth H. Herring. Mr. Herring was a 1945 Honor Graduate of Hanes High School. He also was a 32nd degree Mason, member of Lodge 167. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 13, 1945 and was immediately sent to the Navys Personnel Bureau in Washington, D.C., where he handled all correspondence concerning enlisted personnel for the President, Secretary of the Navy, and Congress. After writing the Operating Manual for the Department, he was discharged in August 1946. After entering UNC at Chapel Hill, he graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration. Being the President of Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, he also became a consultant to the School of Business. Mr. Herring joined his Father in the operation of B. H. Herring and Son Decorating Co., in January of 1951, which had begun in 1927. As the company grew from a painting only business, adding decorating, it also developed a satellite company (Herlee, Inc.) doing insulation and roofing. Mr. Herring was a longtime member of Pine Brook and Bermuda Run Country Clubs and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Winston-Salem. Mr. Herring would like to thank, from the bottom of his heart, Renee Soper, his personal assistant and caregiver for the extraordinary care she gave to both he and his late wife, Ruth. Her care, for nine years, was given above and beyond expectations and he will forever be indebted to her.
