Mr. Slater had worked in the furniture business and had been employed by Haskell Furniture in Clarion and then at Erma's House in Clarion and DuBois. He was a 28-year member of the Strattanville Fire Co. where he served as treasurer and secretary. Mr. Slater was a former Strattanville Council member. His hobbies included fixing clocks and coin collecting and he enjoyed his family. Mr. Slater was married July 8, 1960, to Sandra Eisenman, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Mark Slater and wife, Brenda, of Strattanville; one daughter, Cathy Giles of Clarion and her fiance, John Aaron; and three grandchildren, Julie Giles of Clarion and Markelle Slater and Brenton Slater, both of Strattanville. He also is survived by one brother, Lawrence Eugene Slater of Knox, and two sisters, Edith Hurrelbrink of Knox and Betty Lovell of Billings, Mont. In addition to his parents, Mr. Slater was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Slater and Grace Best; and a great-granddaughter, JaNessa Gerard. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Goble Funeral Home, 330 Wood St., Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the Strattanville Cemetery.

Survivors include 3 sons: Michael Hurrelbrink and his wife, Janet, of Nickleville; Leroy Hurrelbrink and his wife, Betty, of Emlenton and Daniel Hurrelbrink and his wife, Maria, of Romania; 4 daughters: Carol Groner and her husband, Daniel, of Athens, Ohio; Linda Young and her fiancé, Kevin Weckerly, of Clarion; Nancy Davis and her husband, Jeff, of Knox and Carrie Lowe and her husband, Scott, of Clarion. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; a brother, Larry and a sister, Betty. In addition to her parents and husband, Edith was preceded in death by 2 sons, Arthur, Jr. and Steven; 2 grandsons, Derrek and Matthew and a brother and sister, Eddie and Grace. Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in the funeral home with the Reverend Chris Clark officiating over the service. Interment will follow in the St. Paul’s Union Cemetery in Beaver Township, Clarion County. on October 14, 2013.4

W. Slater, of Clarion, died at their home on Thursday, November 7, following an illness of nearly three years. Shortly after birth, she was taken sick with the flu, and never recovered from this illness. She was born on December 15, 1931, making her 3 years ten months and a few days old. Little Helen Genevieve is survived by her parents and two sisters, Grace Leona, 2 and one half years and Edith May 14 months. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, November 9, at 2”30 o’clock. Rev. Claire McKay Stewart, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Clarion, officiated. Burial was made in the Clarion cemetery. on November 14, 1935.2

Best, 72, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Clarion, died on December 2, 2005 in Yankton, S.D. Born June 17, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Edgar W. Sr. and Caroline Siegel Slater. Mrs. Best was married on June 16, 1956, in Clarion to Walter P. Best; he survives. Mrs. Best grew up in Clarion. Her husband's career with the U.S. Air Force had the family residing in many parts of the world including, Malstrom Air Force Base, Great Falls, Mont; Robbins Air Force Base, Georgia; Upper Heyford Air Force Base, England; Minot Air Force Base, N.D; and Ellsworth Air Force Base. They have resided in Sturgis and Rapid City, S.D. for the past number of years. Mrs. Best was a life member of Rushmore Veterans of Foreign War Post 1273 Auxiliary and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, David L. Best and Mitchell G. Best, both of Rapid City, S.D., and Chris E. Best and his wife, Susan, of Omaha, Neb; two brothers, Edgar W. Slater Jr. of Strattanville and Larry E. Slater of Knox; two sisters, Edith Hurrelbrink of Knox and Betty Lovell of Billings, Mont; and grandchildren, Pamela Best and Stephanie Best. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and a son, Ronald W. Best. Private family services with interment were held at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Services was under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City, S.D.

     Walter P. Best was buried at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, Meade Co., South Dakota.2,3 He was born on August 28, 1934 at Beaver Township, Clarion Co., Pennsylvania.2,3 He married Grace Leona Slater, daughter of Edgar William Slater and Caroline A. Sigel, on June 16, 1956.1 Walter P. Best died on February 20, 2014 at Rapid City, Pennington Co., South Dakota, at age 79.2,3 He RAPID CITY - Walter P. Best, 79, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. He was born on Aug. 28, 1934, in Beaver Township, Pennsylvania, to Harry and Margaret (Weaver) Best. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and served through the Korean and Vietnam Wars as a radio operator aboard EC-135 and KC-135's. He retired in 1974 as a Tech Sergeant after serving all over the world with SAC, including, New York, Mississippi, Montana, Morocco, Georgia, England, Florida, Vietnam, Minot and Ellsworth. After his retirement, Walt worked on the planes at the Air & Space Museum for years. After traveling up the ladder of Rushmore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1273, he served as commander from 1994-95, earning a prestigious White Hat. He sat all the chairs in District 10 and was an outstanding commander 2001-02. Walt served many chairmanships in the VFW, including but not limited to VFW Booster for several years, bringing in many new members each year; he also served as blood drive chairman, youth chairman and voice of democracy chairman. Walt was active in the Military Order of the Cootie, the Honored Degree of the VFW, serving in all positions in Pup Tent #20 in Rapid City including seam squirrel. He was active in the Cootie Grand of South Dakota and in District 9 nationally. Walt never missed a VFW or Cootie meeting if he could avoid it, traveling many miles to help veterans, including delivering day old donuts to the Veterans at Ft. Meade for years. He was also active in the DAV. He enjoyed camping and fishing when the family was growing up and they survived the 1972 flood while camping below Pactola Dam near McGee siding. Survivors include three sons, Chris (Susan) Best, Omaha, Neb., Mitchel Best, Rapid City and David Best, Rapid City; and two granddaughters, Pamela (Matthew) Rauen, Northfield, Minn., and Stephanie (Joseph) Bristol, Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Grace in 2005, a son, Ronald, in 1974, and several siblings. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with Chaplain H. B. Cleveland officiating. Inurnment, with military honors rendered by Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard and Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at noon at Black Hills National Cemetery. on February 23, 2014.3
