The family will receive visitors at Oakey's North Chapel on Thursday, September 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Hollins Road Church of the Brethren with reception following the ceremony. As an alternative to flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Renovation Fund at Hollins Road Church of the Brethren, 2404 Hollins Road, N.E., Roanoke, Va. 24012. He was a loving and devoted husband of 18 years to Carol. He is preceded in everlasting life by his father, Bernard "Tommy" Bryant and his grandmother-in-law, Evelyn "Granny" Parr. He temporarily leaves behind his wife, Carol Roberts Bryant; mother, Dorothy "Dot" Bryant; two sons, Gregory S. Frazier and Troy S. Bryant; Troy's wife, Jessamyn and their son, Seth; a sister, Sandy Bryant and her husband, Al Aquilino; a brother, Wayne Bryant; in-laws, Mariah and Perry Roberts; a special cousin, Jeff Hayslett; and many other aunts, cousins, and friends. Bill was blessed to be a member of an exceptionally loving and supportive congregation at Hollins Road Church of the Brethren, where he enthusiastically sang in the choir and helped with the Men's Fellowship activities. He was also blessed with extended church families at Valley ViewWesleyan Church, where he attended Bible Study and fellowshipped with numerous friends, and a loving church family at Ridgeview Brethren in Christ Church. Bill loved to play guitar and sing gospel music, personally composing several songs. His joy came from entertaining others. Bible Study was also a central part of his life, in which he was a devoted disciple of Christ. Sports were an essential part of Bill's life. He coached sandlot football, baseball, basketball, and softball in Salem for many years. It was through softball that he met the love of his life, Carol, and together they could be seen almost every Friday night at various high school football games. Bill loved to watch all sports, and was a huge UVA fan. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing slow-pitch softball. His career also centered around sports. He was the owner of The Wax Box, a sports card/memorabilia shop since 1991. He eagerly went to work each day to talk about sports with his friends and customers. His work gave him an outlet for his strongest personal attributes his love of socializing with others and his generosity. Bill never met a stranger, and he used his business to donate to worthy causes. Kids rarely left his shop without a free card or candy bar. To sum up his life, Bill loved people, and he loved being with people. After a debilitating illness in 2002, his loving mother and wife were the source of his strength, staying by his side continually. He and his Mom became best-buddies, going to Bingo on Tuesday nights and taking vacations together. His rehabilitation was long and painful, but he chose to encourage others instead of seeking comfort for himself. His hospitalizations and dialysis treatments allowed him to form new friendships, and his courage inspired and touched many others. Though he will be painfully missed by his family and friends, we rejoice that his goal of fulfilling God's purpose in his life on earth was accomplished, and that one day we will spend time again with him. on September 9, 2005.5

Gladys Sophia Saum1,2,3,4
F, b. September 21, 1916, d. February 2, 2020
Gladys Sophia Saum Gladys C. Tayloe, 103, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at her residence. She was born in Chambersburg, Pa. on September 21, 1916, child of the late Earl and Carrie Saum. Gladys attended school at James Buchanan School until she was in the high sixth grade, and her parents moved to Roanoke, and then attended Belmont school for half a year. She moved on to Jackson Junior High School and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934. After graduation. Ms. Tayloe became deathly ill with Scarlet Fever and diphtheria and was unable to attend college. Following her recovery, she became employed with S.H. Kress Company in Roanoke, where she met her future husband, Eugene G. “Gene” Tayloe. He was currently employed with N&W Railroad. After a brief courtship, they eloped to Martinsville and were married on December 30, 1938. World War II would prompt Gene to enlist in the U.S. Army, and he was deployed to Korea at the break of the Korean war serving in the transportation corps. During his deployment, Gladys became employed with Thaden Engineering Company before her employment with G.E., where she would retire in 1979, after 23 years of faithful service. Gladys was a long-time volunteer at the Salem VA Medical Center, serving over 27,000 hours of service dating back to 1963.
