Mrs. Amos was a member of the Erie Federated Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. John Harris, Erie, Mrs. Norman Smith, Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Mrs. George Mattox, Parsons; a son, James Amos, Pomona Calif; two sister, Mrs. Bertha Ott, Grand Junction, Colo, and Mrs. Anna Aams, Altamont; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She married George W. Mattox on April 26, 1946, at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Parsons. He survives of the home. They had lived in Parsons since their marriage. For 22 years she was a cook in Parsons schools. She was a member of First Christian Church of Parsons, the Christian Women's Fellowship and Ladies Auxiliary of Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Mattox of Parsons and Jeanette Parsons and her husband, Roger, of Lee's Summit, Mo; two grandchildren, Brett Parsons and Aubrey Parsons, both of Lee's Summit; and three sisters, Ruby Harris and Freda Graver, both of Erie, and Fern Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mattox, 94, longtime area resident, died at 1:12 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2017, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, where he had resided the past several years. He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in rural McCune to George E. and Bertha Louise (Fickess) Mattox. He grew up in the McCune area and during World War II served with the 10th Army. He received the Bronze Star for his participation in the Invasion of Okinawa. George and Vera H. Amos were married on April 23, 1946, at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Parsons. They made their home in Parsons after their marriage. Vera preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2004. For three years Mattox was foreman for the construction of the Fall River Dam. In 1948, he began employment with the Ankortite Co., later named Dayton Superior. He retired in 1987. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Parsons and the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. In past years he and Vera were active in the Good Sams Camping Club. He enjoyed their cabin on the Neosho River and following the activities of his grandchildren. He was privileged to meet and hold all five of his great-grandchildren. Surviving are his daughter, Jeanette Parsons and her husband, Roger; grandson, Brett Parsons and wife Jill; granddaughter, Aubrey Shortino and husband Michael; great-grandchildren, Beckett and Karaleigh Parsons, Brooklyn, Boston and Brock Shortino; sisters, Lela and Wilma; and sisters-in-law, Janet, Jean and Barb. His daughter, Judy Mattox, preceded him in death on March 30, 2010. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Carl, Lee, Dwain, Jim, Bob and Don; and sisters, Wanda, Helen and Loletta. The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Chaplain Wayne Mason officiating.      Judy Irene Mattox LENEXA — Judy Mattox, 60, a former Parsons resident, died at 4:43 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at her home in Lenexa. Death was unexpected. She had moved from Parsons to Johnson County in 2006. She was born July 13, 1949, in Parsons to George W. and Vera H. (Amos) Mattox. She attended school in Parsons and lived here most of her life. For 14 years, she was employed at Broderick Manufacturing Co. and later worked for CLASS Ltd. in its sheltered workshop. She was a member of First Christian Church in Parsons. She attended the Bethesda Options Day Service in Olathe and greatly loved all of the activities it provided. She loved movies and going for pizza, to the park, to ball games and to church. She also enjoyed returning to Parsons to visit her father and participating in the activities of her sister's family. Survivors include her father, George Mattox of Parsons; her sister and her husband, Jeanette and Roger Parsons of Lee's Summit, Mo; a nephew and his wife, Brett and Jill Parsons of Lee's Summit, Mo; and a niece and her husband, Aubrey and Michael Shortino of Lee's Summit, Mo. Her mother, Vera Mattox, preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 2004. The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in McCune Cemetery. Danny Neher at McCune. He preceded her in on Feb. 24, 1994. She lived in the Walnut area for several years before moving to Erie in 1952. She lived at the home in Erie before entering Arkhaven Guest Homes in 1992. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, crossword puzzles, shopping at garage sales, and playing music with her sisters. She was a member of the United Chapel Church near McCune, the Beantown Ramblers Camping Club, Myrtle Rebekah Lodge, the Friendship Club, and the Home Demonstration Unit of Neosho County. Survivors include five sons, John R. Harris, Parsons, Dean Harris, Parsons, Charles Harris, Erie, David Harris, Erie, Jerry Harris, Victorville, Calif; two daughters, Coleen Yockey, Grove, Okla., Patsy Richey, Erie; and 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Freda Graver, Erie, Fern Smith, West Liberty, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by a brother; James Amos, and sister; Vera Mattox, and three grandchildren. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Federated Church at Erie with the Rev. He also worked for the Neosho County Sheriffs Department. In 1970 he went to work for the city of Erie where he was employed until his retirement. John married Ruby Crystal Amos on May 1, 1935 at the home of the Rev. Danny Neher in McCune, Ks. She survives of the home. He was a member of the Beantown Ramblers Campers Club. Survivors include five sons, John Rollins and Donald Dean both of Parsons, Ks., Charles and David of Erie, Ks. and Jerry of Victorville, Calif; two daughters, Coleen Yockey of Moscow, PA. and Patsy Richey of Marietta, GA; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and a sister, Lavon Deuel of Erie, Ks. She was born Aug. 21, 1917, at McCune a daughter of Ernest William and Theresa Edith (McCalister) Amos. She was raised at McCune and her school years were spent at Mound country school and McCune Rural High School. She married Harold Wright of Pratt on Jan. 26, 1936, at the Parsons Foursquare Church. They made their home on a farm southeast of St. Paul for 36 years. Retiring in 1972, they moved to a home in Erie. Mr. Wright preceded her in death in September 1979. She later married Roy Neil Graver on Feb. 7, 1987, at the First Christian Church at Erie. He preceded her in death on April 28, 2009. Freda was a member of First Christian Church, the Rebecca Lodge and was a Grey Lady at the nursing home at Erie. She was also a charter member of the Erie Beantown Ramblers camping club for more than 30 years. She was also a homemaker who enjoyed sharing her farm lifestyle with family and friends. She was supportive of veterans and was loved by all who knew her. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Wright of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Donald Wright of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; three daughters, JoAn McManus and her husband, Jim, of Grant's Pass, Oregon, Norma Jean Burns and her husband, Earl, of Newark, Delaware, and Connie Sumpter of Westville, Florida; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Bobby Wright. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McCune Cemetery with the Rev. He was born October 12, 1920, in Las Animas, Colorado, to Bert Lee and Elizabeth A. (Kimball) Graver. At the age of six months, he moved with his family to Kansas where they lived nine miles northwest of McCune. He attended schools in the Union and McCune areas. Following high school, he worked as a mechanic, steamfitter, and eventually was engaged in farming northwest of McCune. He and Winona Ruth Hammonds were married October 26, 1941, in Girard, Kansas. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1984. On February 7, 1987, he and Freda (Amos) Wright were married and resided in Erie. She survives of the home. He was a member of the Bean Town Campers and had been attending the First Christian Church in Erie. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, working on cars and playing cards. Mr. Smith worked in Civil Service and the couple lived in Texas, South Dakota and Pennsylvania When he retired, they moved to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mr. Smith preceded her in death after 48 years of marriage on September 1989. Fern moved to West Liberty, Ohio, in 2005. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, reading and traveling. Lauderdale, Fla; one daughter, Marilyn Kay Schertzer and her husband, Jim, Bellefontaine, Ohio; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Freda Graver, Lee’s Summit, MO. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Williams Smith, a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Smith, two sisters, Vera Helen Mattox and Ruby Crystal Harris, and a brother, James Amos. Graveside services will be held at 3 pm Friday, June 5, 2015 at Lakeview Cemetery. on June 1, 2015.⁵
