Ira H. Ellison was buried at New Hope Church Cemetery, Monroe Co., West Virginia.3,4,5 He was born on August 22, 1873 at Summers Co., West Virginia.3 He married Maude E. Hoback, daughter of Ferdinand West Hoback and Harriet Virginia Emma Shank, on November 3, 1897 at Summers Co., West Virginia.1,4 Ira H. Ellison died on November 27, 1949 at Marie, Summers Co., West Virginia, at age 76.3,4 He HINTON, Nov. 27 — Ira H. Ellison, 76, widely-known farmer of the Marie-Ballangee community, ended his life at 10:30 o'clock Sunday morning by placing the muzzle of a double barrel shotgun against his left chest, and firing it with a forked stick. He had been in ill health for some considerable time, and suffering from a nervous ailment for more than a year. Going to a corn crib near his home, he placed the butt of the gun against the inside corner, and discharged one barrel into his chest, dying almost instantly. An occupant of the house said she looked out the window upon hearing the shot, and saw him attempt to rise twice, but he was dead when reached. A note was found in his trousers pocket, saying he wanted to be dressed in a suit which he had laid out, where he would like to be buried, and making some disposition of his estate. He had been a farmer all his life, and a resident of the Marie-Ballengee community practically all his life. The body was removed to the Barnette Funeral Home, where an inquest was held Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the New Hope church, near Marie, by the Rev. B. F. Wright, of Talcott, and burial will be made in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Maude Hoback; two sons; Charles Ellison, of Scarbro, and Lloyd H. Ellison, of Kayford; three brothers; O. H. Ellison of Grand Junction, Colo., E. E. Ellison, of Ronceverte, and Burne Ellison, of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. W. G. Harper, of Laurell, Miss., three grand children and one great grand child. on November 28, 1949.4

Born on February 1, 1925 at Cunard, he was the son of the late John Lawrence Witt, Sr. and Ruth Ann Jennings Witt. A native West Virginian, John Witt volunteered for service in 1942 in the Army during World War II. Upon completing Basic Training, he was shipped overseas to the European Theater with the 127th AAA Gun Battalion, arriving in Omaha Beach in Normandy, participating in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, onward through Holland and into Germany. John became deeply involved in communications in the Army and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant before the age of 21. He returned home in 1946 where he was awarded his high school diploma and married his beautiful wife, Constance. In 1949, John moved his family to Maryland long enough to attend the Baltimore Technical School for a degree in electronics. Following his graduation, he and his family returned to West Virginia where he worked in the retail business for one year prior to opening his own business, Radio-TV Clinic in his hometown of Fayetteville. John had a vision for what was coming in the field of communication so he sold his business in 1970 and went to work for the Fayette County Board of Education in the audio/visual division. He was responsible for wiring all the schools in Fayette County for closed-circuit-TV capability. His interest in communications provided an opportunity in the early days of NASA's space travel for him to receive pictures from space which he shared with students of the community. He was appointed as a member of the Fayetteville Town Council from 1963-1965 and then elected as mayor where he held the position from 1965-1983. Upon his retirement from the Board of Education in 1987, he was elected to the Fayette County Commission and continued the work of a public servant. He was instrumental in several community projects, including bringing Route 19 through the town of Fayetteville, developing water services in rural Fayette County, helping found "Bridge Day", assisting in the establishment of the Office of Emergency Services' 911 System, member of the Rotary Club since 1960 where he was presented the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, charter member of the LaFayette Post 149 of the American Legion where he served in all chair positions including the District Commander and State Vice-Commander. He was awarded the West Virginian of the Year for 2002 and was instrumental in many, many other public service initiatives. He also served on the 4C Development Council and Region 4 Council. With all his accomplishments in public service, John Witt never lost an election! John was a member of the Fayetteville United Methodist Church.
