Summers was operating a motorcycle which crashed into a privately owned truck, killing Harold Legg, 21, of 1404 Crescent Rd., a passenger on the motorcycle. He was a veteran of World War II and was discharged April 28, 1946 from the U.S. Navy after serving three years. Mr. Summers is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison A. Summers; three sisters, Miss Mildred Summers and Mrs. Robert Ray of Charleston, Mrs. Fred Haddad of Madison; three brothers, Arthur, Forest and Harold Summers, all of Charleston. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Clay county. on October 28, 1946.³

Surviving is her husband of 64 years, Nolan; sons, Stan and Tim Holstein both of Charleston; daughter, Anne Miller of Charleston; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Nolan was retired from Heck's Department Store with 25 years of service and was a Christian. He was one of the founders of Heck's Incorporated, a chain of discount stores which operated in a multi-state area and traded on the New York Stock Exchange. He retired as its president and chairman in 1983. Since retiring, he has participated in various business ventures and maintained an office in the restored train station in Charleston. He served on various bank boards as well as several government boards. He was a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Sarah Haddad; brother, Nathan Jr; and his loving sister, Mary Frances Ellis. Lawrence Haddad; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Lee and Paul Skaff of Charleston and two granddaughters, Lauren Scholter Haddad and Elizabeth Summers Haddad. on January 14, 2003.⁵ He Frederick Lawrence Haddad, a flamboyant millionaire businessman and philanthropist who changed the face of Charleston, died Monday. He was 81. He was a West Virginia business dynamo for four decades, sometimes plunging into controversies and political battles, and he gave millions for civic projects, including the Haddad Riverfront Park that bears his name. With little formal education or family wealth, Haddad became a self-made success who frequently was in the public spotlight. He once ran for mayor of Charleston. He was the chief bankroller of former Republican Gov. Arch Moore - then turned against Moore and raised money for Democrat Gaston Caperton. He held many properties, from the Kanawha Mall to the Daniel Boone Hotel to the Diamond Department Store to the South Side railway station to the Silver Creek ski resort. Born in 1920 in Boone County, he was the son of a Lebanese immigrant merchant. As a boy, he often skipped school to work in his father's store. He learned the nuances of business from the ground up, said Russ Isaacs, Haddad's longtime business associate and friend. "If the Lebanese aren't the world's original merchants, they're pretty close." Haddad graduated from Scott High School, was an Army Air Forces bombardier in World War II, then rejoined the family store at Madison. In the late 1950s, when discount stores were failing around America, he decided to create one in Charleston. With relatives and friends named Ellis and Cook, plus Keith and Shirley Miller, he launched Heck's, with the name drawn from all their initials. "Haddad's Department Store was across the street from Ellis Department Store" in Madison, Isaacs recalled. "Tom Ellis married Fred's sister, so they were competitors in the little town of Madison. Then they teamed up to start Heck's." The no-frills, warehouse-type store was begun on a shoestring, but succeeded. Other branches were created, and a merchandising empire grew. Stores were built around West Virginia, then in adjoining states, and other chains were purchased. "He was a born merchant with an excellent eye for merchandising," Isaacs said, "and he truly enjoyed the business. He was a stern taskmaster and a hands-on manager." Eventually, Heck's spread to more than 120 stores in 10 states, with 8,000 employees and $500 million annual sales. Heck's stock went public and was held by more than 6,000 shareholders. Tom Potter, Haddad's lawyer and close friend, called Haddad a "classic entrepreneur" with a complex personality. "He was truly one of the most talented people I've ever met and one of my most interesting and dynamic clients," Potter said. "He was brilliant in so many ways. He was the most insightful businessperson I've ever known and had the quickest mind in evaluating and analyzing a business transaction. He was a risk-taker and an opportunist in the best sense of the words." Haddad sometimes attributed the success of Heck's to its finance chief, Isaacs. In 1974, Isaacs was a member of the Kanawha County school board during the fundamentalist uprising against "godless textbooks," and pickets surrounded Heck's stores. In 1983, Haddad gave control of the chain to Isaacs and sold his 6 percent interest, worth $7.7 million. By this time, Haddad had become a benefactor of Sunrise, the University of Charleston, and various civic efforts. He owned a Nitro warehouse, a former Kanawha City bakery and other properties. He became a major developer, turning the former Libbey-Owens-Ford glass plant site into Kanawha Mall and the old True Temper tool factory site into a Patrick Street mall. By 1987, the Heck's chain had faltered, sold off many stores, and floundered into bankruptcy. Haddad accused his former protege of mismanagement and offered to buy back remnants of his old business, but they were sold to other parties. Haddad was a strong benefactor of Yeager Airport in Charleston. Lawyer Ed Hill, who worked with him on the Yeager governing board, said Haddad was a "dynamic and driving force" behind the airport. "Ten years ago, he insisted that we look to the future, beyond the threats of having another airport built elsewhere, and concentrate on upgrading Yeager Airport and fulfilling its potential," Hill said. Hill was particularly impressed by Haddad's financial savvy. "He was considered a financial wizard on our board, and we deferred to him on many financial matters. Inevitably, he was proven to be right." In 1991, as Charleston attempted to raise matching money to turn the city levee into a riverfront park, former Mayor Chuck Gardner offered to name the park for anyone giving $500,000. Haddad donated the money. He also gave heavily to other Charleston causes - although he once threatened to cancel a gift to the state Center for the Arts & Sciences unless city leaders backed his version of a plan to convert the abandoned Diamond building into state offices. But he relented and gave a vital $500,000 that made it possible to break ground for the $80 million showplace. In 1997, he gave $100,000 to the Secret Santa program so that bicycles could be provided to a multitude of needy West Virginia children. Isaacs said Haddad had a soft heart behind the tough exterior. "You could probably say Fred was a soft touch. He did a lot of charitable giving quietly. He would read those stories about people in the newspaper charity drives and write a check. He was a tough, hard-nosed businessman who would best you in a business deal then give you the shirt off his back." In a statement, Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., said Haddad's philanthropic work helped to improve the quality of life in West Virginia. Byrd said he worked with Haddad to complete the development of Haddad Riverfront Park. "He has been a stalwart for numerous community organizations, supporting them with the contributions of time and funds. "He was always dedicated to his community, to his state, and to its people. With his passing, West Virginia has lost a great citizen, and I have lost a friend." on January 14, 2003.¹⁰
