McCoy, 74, founder of the Manasota Aviation Foundation and a longtime Civil Air Patrol member, died Thursday. The Baltimore native's Civil Air Patrol involvement began in the early '60s, through chapters in Pennsylvania and Maryland. She joined the Sarasota-Bradenton Squadrons Civil Air Patrol when her family moved here 23 years ago. Last year, she founded the Manasota Aviation Foundation, which funds aviation groups. According to her son, Dennis, the patrol was always a family affair. "She got involved with it because her husband, William, was; and he got involved because his father was. And I got involved because of William. So, there's been four generations of McCoys involved in Civil Air Patrol." Though Dorothy was a member of the patrol's adult program, the cadet program (for youths 13 to 18) always held her heart. Patty Jones, mother of a cadet program member, recalled McCoy as "A very nice lady, and we respected her a great deal. She put the kids first and was always very supportive. If members had a yard sale, she was there. She just got back from a camping trip with them to Venice - and though it was very cold, she went." Foundation co-founder Bob Jones added, "The loss of this lady is going to be a read tragedy for us. She's been so giving and so caring." Dorothy's hobbies also focused on the young. Dennis recalled his mother's habit of collecting "orphaned" stuffed animals. "She refurbished them and donated them to nursing homes and children's homes. She sent them anywhere they'd bring a little bit of joy." McCoy attended First United Methodist Church of Bradenton. In addition to her son, Dennis, survivors include a son, William R. of Windber, Pa; two sisters, Evelyn Dell of Bradenton and Irene Rollins of Sarasota; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. on February 3, 1996.5
