Later, she became a recruiter for the WAC in the San Francisco area. On her day off, she would visit the burn wing of the military hospital in Marin County; reading mail to the patients and sending letters of hope and encouragement to their families. She received numerous bouquets and requests for marriage. The flowers she gave to patients who seldom received mail or visitors. The proposals she remembered as "cards of a heart felt thank you."
