He had been in declining health for five years and in Riverside Health Care for two weeks. Born July 27, 1911, in Keeling, he was the son of the late James W. Hardy and the late Nettie Lewis Hardy. He lived most of his life in Ringgold. He was a retired farmer, an avid gardener, and of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army in World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct medal, the Bronze Star medal, the Distinguished Unit badge and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was married to Sarah McCormick Hardy. In addition to his wife of 62 years, of the residence, he is survived by a sister, Ethel H. Slaughter of Ringgold. He was predeceased by three sisters, Mildred H. Hardy, Mabel Hardy and Gracie H. Alderson. The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 3 at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times they will be at the residence, 272 Raven Hollow Road, Ringgold. The family suggests that memorial donations may be given to Kentuck Volunteer Fire Dept., 200 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold, VA 24586; and to the Ringgold Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA 24586. Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements. on September 2, 2005.2

She enjoyed visiting neighbors as well as greeting new neighbors; she enjoyed babysitting neighborhood children and she was an excellent seamstress. She was a homemaker. She was married to the late Ralph Hunter Slaughter who died June 21, 1997. She is survived by two daughters, Judy S. Stuckert and husband, Ronnie Stuckert Jr., of Ringgold and Ellen S. Nester and husband, Jerry Nester, of Blairs; grandchildren, Rodney S. Davis and James H. Nester; four step-grandchildren, Thomas R. Stuckert, Tammy R. Stuckert, Teresa S. Quesenberry and Tracy L. Stuckert; and five step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, William Hardy; three sisters, Hester Mildred Hardy, Gracie Alderson and Mable Hardy; a daughter, Janice Fay Beadles; and her husband, Tim Beadles. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Soyars officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 North Main St; at other times they will be at the home of Jerry and Ellen Nester, 977 Lawless Creek Road, Blairs. Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. on November 13, 2007.4

She lived most of her life in Keeling. She retired from Belk-Leggett Department Store where she worked as sales clerk. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church and worked with the church extention department. She was first married to Clancy Shelby Johnson, who predeceased her. She married her second husband, James Weldon Simmons, on Aug. 9, 1970. In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two stepdaughters, Lois S. Rowland of Chatham and Betty S. Clifton of Danville; one stepson, Clancy S. Johnson of Danville; four brothers, Aubrey Turner of Danville, Leonard Turner of Gretna, Elmer Turner of Keeling and Lester Turner of Providence, N.C; two sisters, Louise Wilson of Gretna and Charlotte Goodson of Dry Fork; eight step grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren and one step great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by four brothers, Marvin Turner, Charlie Turner, Norman Turner and Luke Turner; a sister, Lucille Augustine; and a stepdaughter, Doris McDaniel. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Herman Absher and the Rev. Kyle Flora officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends form 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times will be at the residence. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Keeling Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 12, Keeling, VA 24566. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main, is in charge of arrangements. on February 3, 2004.1
