Eddie Gay Green Gay Green, 80 year old financier of Asheville, died at his home early Friday morning, June 8, 1951. Death apparently resulted from a heart attack. He had been in declining health for several years following a heart attack suffered five years earlier at his winter home in Sebring, Fla. Green, who built a fortune on his faith in Asheville, was president of the Imperial Life Insurance Company and owner of Green Brothers Furniture Store, 40 College Street, and president of the Carolina Tobacco Corporation. He was born August 16, 1870 near Leicester, the son of the late Jesse M. and Laura Thrash Green. He attended schools in the Leicester section, Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn. and the University Of Chattanooga, Tenn. In 1887, his family moved from Leicester to Asheville and Green established a grocery store, about three years later on the corner of Roberts and Buxton Streets. After several years, he sold the grocery store and moved to Watsonville, Calif., where he entered the hotel business. He returned to Asheville in 1902, when he and his brother, Ottis Green, opened a furniture store at 40 Patton Avenue. In 1905, he organized the Imperial Life Insurance Company and served as its president until his death. In 1906 he purchased 500 acres of land in West Asheville, extending from Carrier Bridge to Sulphur Springs Road. In 1912, he and John Lange purchased the then uncompleted Langren Hotel and opened it for business in 1913. The name of the hotel is a combination of the names of the two men. Green took the lead, along with Pat M. Burdette and James G.K. McClure, in the re-establishment of the Asheville tobacco market in 1930 after a lapse of more than 30 years. Largely as a result of his interest and financial backing, the Carolina Tobacco Warehouse opened its door in that year, despite the fact that the bank crash occurred a short time earlier. He retained his faith in the future of Asheville despite business upheavals. The years proved that his faith was justified. At the time of his death, he had extensive real estate holdings, including several buildings in downtown Asheville. He was Asheville’s largest individual property owner. A few years prior to his death, his fortune was estimated at some $4,000,000. Although he gave to many charities, one of his favorite interests was Eliada Orphanage. He and his brother, Dr. Nat Green, of San Diego, Calif., donated money for a baby home at the orphanage in memory of their mother. He was a member of the Asheville Rotary Club and the Black Mountain Rod and Gun Club and attended Central Methodist Church. He married Miss Effie M. Reeves of the Sandy Mush section in 1893. Surviving, in addition to the widow, are two brothers, Ottis Green of Asheville and Dr. Nat Green of San Diego, Calif; a nephew, Ottis Green, Jr. of Asheville; a niece, Mrs. J.D. Johnston of Asheville, and a number of cousins. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 1951 in the home with the Rev. T.A. Groce and the Rev. Douglas Corriher, pastor of Haywood Street Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.3 He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, 53 Birch Street, Asheville, Buncombe Co., North Carolina.3 He was born on August 16, 1870 at Leicester, Buncombe Co., North Carolina.2,3 He married Effie Margaret Reeves on December 24, 1893 at Buncombe Co., North Carolina.3,8,4 Eddie Gay Green died on June 8, 1951 at Asheville, Buncombe Co., North Carolina, at age 80.9,3

He was a life trustee of Eliada Home and had also served on the board of the Good Samaritan Mission. He had also been president of the Half Century Club of Duke University and had served as trustee of the Durham Foundation and the Groce Foundation and had served on the board of Highland Hospital. Mr. Green married Miss Allene Broach of Meridian, Miss. on May 15, 1907. Mrs. Green died November 13, 1963. Mr. Green had also been a benefactor of Brevard College and had been named “Trustee for life” by the Brevard College Board of Trustees. Mr. Green was born July 29, 1874 at Newfound Creek in the Leicester section of Buncombe County. His parents were Jesse Marion Green and Laura Lucinda (Thrash) Green, both natives of Candler.
