Gaylord Glen Conner Jr. was buried at Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Pike Co., Kentucky.3 He Gaylord Glen Conner, Jr., 74, of Sunset Addition, Williamson, passed away on March 28, 2018, at his residence. Born June 21, 1943, in Clay County, WV, he was a son of the late Gaylord Glen Conner, Sr., and Norma Nettles Conner. A “Green Beret”, Glen was a veteran of the elite United States Army Special operation force. Glen honorably served his nation during the Vietnam War. He was a weapons specialist, an explosive specialist, and a paratrooper. Following his military service, Glen earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pikeville College, and later attended Averett University earning a Master of Business Administration degree. Glen was long identified with and well respected in the coal mining industry. He served as the president of several Massey Energy companies over the course of his 40-year career including Kemper Coal Company, Omar Mining Company, and Elk Run Coal Company. He retired from Massey Energy in 2005. Not quite ready for full-time retirement, he opened and operated Conner Insurance Agency in downtown Williamson for 10 years. Glen and his wife, Margaret Conner, the former owner and operator of a prominent local real estate agency, Real Estate 2, shared office spaces on the corner of Second Avenue until their retirement nearly four years ago. Glen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Williamson; Williamson Park Board; and Mountain Club. He was a former Matewan City councilman, former member of the Matewan Rotary Club, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the long-running Magnolia Fair. He was also a former member of the Tug Valley Mining Institute. Glen was an avid reader, often reading several books per week. Glen’s was a life well-lived. He found success in his mining career and later in his insurance venture. He deeply loved his family and was a devoted husband, loving and protective father and an awesome grandfather. A constant source of quiet strength and a trusted guide, he will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his family and many friends. Survivors in addition to his wife, Margaret Phillips Conner, include a daughter, Cecilia (Keith) Staten, Williamson; three sons, Glen (Kellie) Conner, III, Lake Wylie, SC, Chris (Heather) McCoy, Williamson, Shaun (Kristy) McCoy, Pittsburgh, PA; seven grandchildren, Patrick Staten, Greenville, SC, Farren Staten, Williamson, Haley, Jessica, and Sara McCoy, Pittsburgh, PA, Niles, and Aidan McCoy; Williamson; two brothers, Richard (Velma) Conner, Richlands, VA and Gary (Rose) Conner, Raleigh, NC; a sister, Loretta (Irvin) Sargent, Parkersburg, WV; and a host of extended family members and friends. Visitation is from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Friday, March 30, 2018, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church of Williamson. Reverend Bill Hudson will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment is in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, KY. Active pallbearers include Glen Conner, III, Chris McCoy, Shaun McCoy, Niles McCoy, Aidan McCoy, Patrick Staten, and Keith Staten. The Men of the First Presbyterian Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. She is survived by her husband, Clyde Burl Westfall of Sutton; son, Clyde Burl "Sonny" Westfall Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Durham, N.C; five daughters, Patsy Rose and husband, Vernon, of Sutton, Carol Sue Slaton of Rogersville, Ala., Florence "Topsy" Scarberry of Charleston, Alice Mae Smallwood and husband, Donald and Tiffany Westfall of Sutton; brother, William Conner of Cross Lanes; sisters, Dollie Butcher and Betty Jo King of Charleston and Phyllis Jean Fields of Mantua, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Polemic Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Hoover officiating. Burial will be in Tinney Cemetery, near Sutton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton.
