Michael Ray "Mike" Duffy1,2

M, b. January 17, 1951, d. June 10, 2009
Michael Ray "Mike" Duffy was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.2 He was born on January 17, 1951.2 He married Julia Katherine "Julie" Poff, daughter of Duard Murphy Poff and Rachel Ellen Taylor, on September 14, 1974.1,2 Michael Ray "Mike" Duffy died on June 10, 2009 at Virginia at age 58.2 He Michael Ray Duffy, 58, of Salem, Va., passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. He was born on January 17, 1951. He was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Helen Duffy; mother-in-law, Rachel Poff; and his big brother, Daniel Ray Duffy, who named Mike after himself. He was a very intelligent student of life and loved to learn something about everything. He had several careers starting with welding at GE. He joined his family's business, Vogue Cleaners and Laundry, where he was the owner and operator of Vogue HydraMaster Carpet & Upholstery Service. When his father became ill, he took a "break" to lovingly care for him. He then went on to work for the City of Salem where he had many positions, his favorite being maintenance of the new Salem Stadium. He became interested in water treatment and earned his Virginia Class I treatment license and worked at the Salem Water Department. In 1996, he had a series of heart problems and decided to follow another of his interests to a career as a tool salesman. He worked for McCulley Enterprises and Contractors and Industrial Supply. He returned to "making water" for Roanoke County and his last career in life was at the newly formed Western Virginia Water Authority where he worked at Spring Hollow. He loved that facility and enjoyed working several years there. He had a lifelong love of cars and spent much of his free time driving through car lots. He was a former member of the Roanoke Valley Harley Owner's Group, but decided in his "old age" to start driving a convertible where he had luxuries such as heat, air conditioning, and a roof when needed. He enjoyed many other interests such as fishing, working outside, cooking, and being a jack of all trades. He could accomplish anything that he applied himself to. He was also a member of Bethel Baptist Church. On September 14, 1974, he married his best friend and spent over 34 years spoiling her. His greatest accomplishment in life was his daughter who made him so proud. He is lovingly survived by his wife and true love, Julie; their daughter, Heather; son-in-law, Michael Parisi; and grandson, Owen, who brought him much joy. He enjoyed every moment of being a granddaddy. He is also survived by his cousin, Doug Parris, whom he considered his brother; his in-laws and their families, Don and Sharon Poff, Joe and Luana Poff, and Terry Poff; his aunts, Clara Scaggs, Jean Palermo, and Katherine Morris; several cousins who were very special to him; and many friends. He is also survived by his rescued cat, Roscoe. A period of visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2009, in the funeral home's chapel. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Bethel Baptist Church and Pastor Hilton Jeffries for their support during his illness. Online condolences to the family may be made at johnmoakey.com. The Duffy family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va., 540-389-5441. on June 12, 2009.2
