He was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon and Elder. He was a former member of Covington City Council. He was a retired member of the Westvaco Rescue Squad and Fire Department and had served as Vice President of Union Local 675. Jake loved to hunt, fish, garden and talk politics. Surviving are his Wife of 72 years, Mildred Key Crawford, of Covington; his Son and Daughter-in-law, Darrell and Ruth Crawford, of Covington; three Daughters and Sons-in-law, Donna and Doug Arrington of Covington, Tammy and Jerry Ferris and Emmy and Dean Baker all of Blue Ridge; five grandchildren, Shane Crawford, Shannon Crawford and wife, Lora, Joshua Steffeyand wife, Stephanie, Savannah Yaussand husband, Stephen, and Chelsea Broce; three great grandchildren, Marley Crawford, Dakota Crawford and Hunter Steffey; one Brother, Charles Denver "Denny" Crawford and his Wife, Evan, of Madison, WI; one Sister, Frances Brouse, and her Husband, Tommy, of Sanford, NC, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held Wednesday at 2 PM, April 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating assisted by Rev. Mike Fleenor. Interment was made in the Suck Springs Baptist Church Cemetery at Bedford at 4 PM with graveside rites conducted by Lynchburg Post 16 of the American Legion. The family received their friends for one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at Arritt Funeral Home. The family suggests that donations in Mr. Crawford's name be made to Mountain Regional Hospice; P.O. 637; Clifton Forge, VA 24422. on April 23, 2014.2

     William Conrad Byers was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 1521 South Carpenter Drive, Covington, Alleghany Co., Virginia.1,2 He was born on February 14, 1840 at Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., Virginia.1,2 He married Florence Alma Crowder, daughter of John Lewis Crowder and Eliza Jane Crowder, on April 2, 1893 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee.3,4,2 William Conrad Byers died on July 19, 1929 at Teaberry Flat, Alleghany Co., Virginia, at age 89.1,2 He William Conrad Byers died about 2 o'clock this morning at his home near Covington following illness of six weeks. Mr. Byers was 89 years old. He was a veteran of the Civil War and fought in a number of battles, serving first in the command of General Stonewall Jackson and later in the Army of Northern Virginia under General Lee. He was probably the eldest Confederate Veteran in this section of Virginia. Mr. Byers was born at Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County. He is survived by his widow, Mr. Florence Crowder Byers, and fourteen children, all living; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren The funeral will take place Saturday at 3 o'clock from the home in Teaberry Flat. Interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. on July 20, 1929.2

Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington, Va. She was a native of Covington, Va., and had resided in Greensboro for the past 50 years. Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her husband, Ray W. "Weenie" Hodges Sr., in 1954, and a daughter, Eloise Hodges Martinelli, in 1995. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ray W. Hodges Jr. and Ethel Hodges of Conyers, Ga; a son-in-law, Robert Martinelli, of Greensboro; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends at the residence. Memorials may be made to Boys Homes Inc., 306 Boys Home Road, Covington, VA 24426. on January 28, 2004.3
