He was born on March 16, 1903, in the Wheatland neighborhood of Bedford County, Va. He was the son of Oscar K. Kidd of Bedford County and Estella Blanch Johnson of Campbell County, Va. He attended the Bedford public schools and earned his B.S. degree in electrical engineering at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. He was employed in the engineering department of the Western Electric Company at Kearney, N.J. at the beginning of the Great Depression in 1929. Following a massive employee reduction due to the depression, he worked for the Brooklyn Edison Company, presently Consolidated Edison and was involved in the conversion and standardization of several types of distribution systems including some of Thomas A. Edison's. The remaining 31 years of his career were with Appalachian Power Company in Bluefield. He began in the Transmission and Distribution Department in February 1937. He progressed through several stages of engineering including District Supervising Engineer, Division Line Engineer, and at the time of his retirement in 1968, Division Superintendent. Following the end of World War II, under government sponsorship, he taught classes for several years in Practical Electricity to returning war veterans. He was active in the local engineering society serving for several years as secretary-treasurer of the Southeast Chapter of West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of West Virginia. He was a member of the Pocahontas Electrical and Mechanical Institute. He was an early member of the University Club and a former member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of College Avenue Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He was also a member of the Deacons' Board and served several terms as chairman. He later became a member of Bland Street United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board. He spent much of his retirement time gardening, enjoying his four grandsons, and making beautiful pieces of walnut furniture in his woodworking shop for family and friends. He leaves his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothea Gautier Poff Kidd; son, William Christopher Kidd Jr. (Kathy) of Vinton, Va; and daughter, Nancy Kidd Holmes (Charles) of Westerville. Grandsons include William Christopher Kidd III (Mary Lynn) of Raleigh, N.C; Steven Trent Holmes (Susan) of Trumbull, Conn; Lance Christopher Holmes (Mindy) of Westerville; and Jeffrey Poff Holmes (Angie) of Westerville. Great-grandchildren include Mary Francis Kidd, Sydney James Kidd, Abigail Leigh Holmes, Cameron Kidd Holmes, Sydney Tammarine Holmes, and London Gautier Holmes. Brothers include Reuben P. Kidd, Garland J. Kidd, and sister, Thelma Kidd Olson. Brothers, Mahlon C. and Raymond O. Kidd and sister, Stella Kidd Mallard, precede him in death. The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Bland Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Warren Faulknier and the Rev. Joe Geiger officiating. His grandsons will serve the family as pallbearers. Burial will follow at the Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley. The family will receive friends today from 6-8 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home, 1231 W. Cumberland Road, Bluefield. Contributions to the William C. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Harry Sledd; daughter, Sandra Sledd Pugh; three sisters and brothers-in-law. Surviving are her children, Don (Donna) Sledd, Marie (Lewis) Bowling, Peggy (Alton) Hall, Pat (Mitch) Webb, Anne Sledd, Becky (Tex) McPherson; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren who she loved and adored; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Sledd, Helen Sledd, Cecil (Fred) Bussey, Norma Cootes; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her family expresses special appreciation to Susan and all those at Carilion Hospice for the care and comfort they provided.
