Sometime during elementary school, Wayne's father, who was the Beckley fire chief, moved his family from East Beckley to Clyde Street, and Wayne and Jean lost touch until they were in high school, where they occasionally dated. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Jean moved away in August 1958, and, in October 1958, Wayne joined the U. S. Army, where he spent a 20-year career, and received the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal. He retired as a Master Sergeant E8 in November 1978. During his Army career, Wayne did two tours in Korea, one tour in Vietnam, and two tours in Germany. After retirement from the Army, Wayne spent 22-andone-half years with the Florida Department of Transportation in DeLand, and retired there as an Engineer 3. In 2001, after 43 years, Wayne and Jean found each other again, and were married in July 2002. They both enjoyed traveling, and especially spending time in New Jersey with Wayne's sister Mary and her husband, Bob. Their favorite thing was to do the sights, sounds and tastes of New York City with Bob and Mary. Early on New Year's Eve 2010, Jean's soul mate passed away peacefully in her arms at the Halifax Health Hospice Care Center in Orange City. Wayne was a good, simple man, who loved life and his country, stood up for what he believed in, and backed down from no one. He was preceded in death by his sisters Margaret and Linda, and his brother, Clark. Wayne was a lifetime member of the DeLand Radio Control Club, where he served as secretary, vice president and president, and was on the club's board of directors. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He will be missed forever, and will always be loved by many, especially his wife, Jean, and his beloved Yorkie, Bridgette. on January 6, 2011.³

She was born one of six children to the fire chief of Beckley, WV, Bernard Martin and his wife, Genevieve Perry. All eight of her family are now deceased except one sister, Mary Hall (husband Bob) of Chatham, NJ. She is survived by two daughters, whom she raised as a single mother. They are: Kendra Therrell (Husband Jay) of Jacksonville and Beth Johnson (husband Matt) of DeLand. Helen's grandsons who filled her heart with joy are: Paul Therrell, son of Kendra and Jay, and Gabriel Johnson, son of Beth and Matt. Helen worked nearly 45 years, beginning as a roller-skating car hop at the old Dog N' Suds in DeLand; a bank teller in DeLand; a few years at the State Dept. in Washington, D.C; co-owner of a funeral home in Lake City, FL; owner of a flower shop in Lake City, FL; and 23 years at Daytona State College where she had various jobs, the last several years as a facilities planner. After retirement, Helen traveled to many countries with her daughters, including the Holy Land in Jerusalem; the pyramids in Egypt and Vatican City in Italy. They also drove across America twice, visiting most of the fifty states. Helen enjoyed creating cross-stitched pieces for her family; playing bridge; and planting flowers and shrubs in the yard. She felt privileged to represent abused and neglected children in court as a Guardian ad Litem, and was passionate about serving senior citizens as a hospice volunteer. She was a longtime member of DeLand's First United Methodist Church.
