James Tracy Elmore was born on February 4, 1890 at Ingleside, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,3,4,5 He married Olah Margaret Hoke on July 4, 1917 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,7 James Tracy Elmore died on August 16, 1938 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 48.3,8,4 He James T. Elmore, 41, of Wickham avenue. Princeton, died in Memorial hospital yesterday afternoon at five o'clock from a fractured skull received about 6:45 Monday evening on Thorn street, East Princeton, when Elmore is alleged to have been knocked down by Jack Candler, 21-year old East Princeton youth. Elmore was operated on about noon yesterday but efforts to save his life were futile. His head is said to have struck the sidewalk when he fell causing a fracture at the base of the brain. Candler was arrested at 2 o’clock Tuesday morning and was held for investigation at the county jail. The arrest was made by Deputy Sheriff C. C. Elmore and city Patrolman Kenneth Richards. Roscoe Pendleton, prosecuting attorney, started working on the case later Tuesday morning. According to statements of several witnesses given to investigating officers, Elmore stepped up to a group of youths on the East Princeton street and allegedly said “someone ought to knock the socks off him,” referring to Candler, whereupon the latter is said to have swung at Elmore, striking him on the jaw knocking him to the ground Elmore is said to have been "shaming" Candler because the latter had whipped another youth, aaid to have been somewhat smaller. Elmore, a World war veteran disabled by asthma, was taken to Memorial hospital, but he would not remain. He was returned to East Princeton and got out of the car at the East Side Drug company and walked home. Mrs. Elmore was at the Kee Street church revival service, and when she returned home between 9 and 10 o'clock, she found her husband unconscious on the back porch. Dr. J. J. Martell was called to treat him. At 10 o'clock Tuesday morning Elmore was taken to Memorial hospital and an operation was performed. Death occurred five hours later. The body was taken to the Memorial Funeral Home, Mercer street, where an autopsy was performed for the state at seven o'clock last night. Elmore leaves his widow, a son, Robert, and a daughter, Margaret. on August 17, 1938.8
