On January 4, Bynum Doughton Simmons passed away at the age of 92 after having battled with chronic kidney disease for years. Bynum was a lifelong resident of Harford County, an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church for many years, and attended Hopewell Methodist Church later in life. The youngest son of Major McKinley Simmons and Amelia Blanche (Cockerham) Simmons, Bynum was born on June 7, 1928, in Churchville, MD, and never lived more than 10 minutes away. After leaving the family farm, he spent his career working in or managing the parts department for various car dealerships in the area. Bynum’s true passion was his music, whether leading congregational singing in a church, singing lead in a gospel quartet, entertaining at a nursing home or church event, or playing his banjo or guitar with friends in his home. Many people will remember him as the man who tuned the piano in their home, a part-time role he enjoyed for over 50 years. He is survived by his son, Daniel; his daughter, Terry; son-in-law, Ken Moore; their daughters, Kristina and Jennifer, and their husbands and four children; his dear friend, Hazel Coen; and his nephew, Paul Simmons. He is predeceased by his brother, Alton H. Simmons; nephew, Howard C. Simmons; and his wife of 20 years, Betty Jean (Scarborough) Simmons. Bynum, modest and soft-spoken, enjoyed a long life full of love, friendship, faith, and music. Ken traveled to Haiti twice, and also visited a missionary-built school in South Africa while on a photo safari with his son last year. In addition to being Pastor of Somerset Baptist Church, he was also employed by New Directions in New Bedford, MA as a senior workshop instructor and an offender work force development specialist. He recently received accreditation as a Global Career Development Facilitator. Before coming to Somerset, he served churches in Randolph and Bethel, Vermont. Survivors besides his wife are a daughter, Dee Scarborough Corton of Plainville, MA; a son, Ken Scarborough, Jr.and his wife Merry of Cranston, RI; four loving grandchildren, Emma, Megan, David and Nathan. He was the brother of the late Betty Simmons. on April 27, 2011.2

A very ornery, free-spirit, Marty loved being on the road meeting people and making new friends all over the country. He was a very funny, loveable guy who fascinated many with the stories he shared over the years. He enjoyed tinkering and mechanics, especially his truck. Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Deborah L. (Sullivan) Martin of Heath; son, Gerald (Dawn) Martin of Baltimore, MD; daughter, Sandra (Joseph) Zapf of Baltimore, MD; grandson, Jeremiah (Trisha) Siebert; great-granddaughter, Sadie Siebert; and brother, Steven Martin of Richmond, VA. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Douglas Martin. on February 11, 2014.2

She was preceded in death by her husband Berlin Baker; parents John and Mattie Humphreys; 2 brothers Paul and Lester Humphreys; and 1 great-granddaughter Mattie Baker Downer. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Dolan and Ruth Baker of Williamston, NC; Barton and Judy Baker of Morgantown, WV; Arden and Linda Baker of Covington, VA; grandchildren Dwayne and Douglas Baker, Aaron Baker, Molly Downer, and Ryan Baker; great-grandchildren Rachel, Kailey, Coleman, Brandon, Daniel, Luke, J.J., and Weston Baker. She was baptized at the age of 16 and was a lifetime member of Maple Grove Christian Church for 87 years. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years. Helen was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of Paint Bank Volunteer Fire Department. She was active in the Craig Co. Historical Society and wrote many historical accounts about the Paint Bank Community. Her favorite pastimes were quilting and crocheting. She had numerous friends and neighbors and never met a stranger. Interment will follow at Paint Bank Community Cemetery.6 She was born on July 15, 1912 at Paint Bank, Craig Co., Virginia.5,3 As of October 23, 1937,her married name was Baker.2 She married William Berlin Baker on October 23, 1937 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,6,3,7 Helen Irene Humphreys died on January 26, 2016 at Virginia at age 103.6,3

She was born July 7, 1913 in New Castle, Va., to Loren and Martha Lugar. Maude lived her life as wife and mother in Paint Bank and in New Castle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul V. Humphreys; daughter, Martha H. Ruble; grandson, Martin Howard Ruble; daughter-in-law, Catherine G. Humphreys; two sisters, Thelma L. Layman and Kate L. Webb; and one brother, W. Frank Lugar. She is survived by a son, H. Thornton Humphreys of Ellijay, Ga; a daughter and son-in-law, George and Inez Craft of Salem, Va; a son and daughter-in-law, Purcell and Sue Humphreys of Daleville, Va; and a son-in-law, Martin D. Ruble of Steilacoom, Wash; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of South Roanoke Nursing Home for the loving care and support during these past weeks. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2006 at Paint Bank Community Cemetery with the Rev. George Edwards officiating. on October 6, 2006.1
