Dr. Rives earned his D.D.S. degree at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. His dental practice spanned many years in Norfolk. Dr. Rives is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathryne Mattox Rives of Chatham, Va., and their three children, Sarah Rives Kehayas and her husband Anthony W. Kehayas, and sons William F. Rives and John M. Rives. He is also survived by brothers, Virgil A. Rives and his wife Ruth H. Rives and James T. Rives (Tal) and his wife Ginger Rives; three granddaughters, Kristen Sullivan, Lori Kehayas and Heather Kehayas; and great-granddaughter, Megan Sullivan; plus numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Dr. Rives was a member of Larchmont United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. His magnificent roses and vegetable garden were legendary. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Tidewater Anglers Club. He was also a member of the Union Hunt Club in Surry, Va., the American and Tidewater Rose societies, and a lifetime member of the American Dental Association. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, European Theater being awarded the Purple Heart. A graveside service will follow at the Historic St. Lukes Church, Smithfield, Va. on December 26, 2003.⁷
