Bill died unexpectedly though peacefully at home in Saratoga, California on January 25, 2007. He was 84. Bill was educated in West Virginia Public Schools and graduated from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania in 1944. He also attended Yale School of Forestry. He grew up hunting and fishing with his father and friends in West Virginia and carried his love of the outdoors throughout his life. With WWII raging, Bill entered Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. He joined the Army's 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado. He was deployed to Italy where he gallantly served with the 10th as they broke through the German Gothic Line. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for bravery and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. He was recalled to active duty as a Captain during the Korean War and served as an advisor to the Korean Army in Taegu Korea. Bill married Carol Landon Anderson in Danville, Virginia on August 9, 1951. They started their family in Marion, Ohio, moving to Mountain Home, Idaho in 1960 to work with the Titan Missile Project before arriving and settling in Saratoga, CA in 1962. He retired from Lockheed at the Santa Cruz Test facility in 1987. Following retirement from Lockheed, Bill and Carol took at least two trips yearly and traveled extensively throughout the world. Bill relished never having to wake at 4:30am to go to work again, though a 4:30am alarm to travel or fish was pure joy. Bill is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 55 years, Carol Shawhan, Sons Bill, Tom and Bob, and daughter Heather.
