His Social Security Number was 433-12-4613.3 Sam Price Gullat Jr. was buried at Union Christian Cemetery, Newtown, Fountain Co., Indiana.1 He was born on December 20, 1921 at Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.2,3,4 He married Dorothy Chrystine Minnick, daughter of Dowe Smith Minnick and Blanche McConahay, in 1948.1,5,4 Sam Price Gullat Jr. died on November 29, 2008 at Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas, at age 86.3,4 He Sam Price Gullatt Jr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed on November 29, 2008 in Dallas. His integrity, moral strength, and love have been an inspiration to his family, his church community, and to students and colleagues. Sam grew up in Ruston, Louisiana and was born Dec. 20, 1921 the son of Sam P. Gullatt Sr and Ruby V. Hornsby with his three sisters and two brothers: Marjorie Lee Barnes, Virginia Borchelt, Elizabeth Sehon, John H. Gullatt and Benjamin F. Gullatt. During World War II he met Dorothy (Dottie) Chrystine Minnick, whom he married in 1948. Dottie passed on in 1978 and they are survived by Patricia G. Johnsrud and her husband Richard (Kirkland, Washington), Dowe D. Gullatt and his wife Pat, Mary Lou Kingsbery and her husband Guy, and William P. Gullatt (all of Austin, Texas). They are also survived by his five grandchildren, Tanner M. Johnsrud (Boston, Massachusetts), Chelsea Brïe Palmer (Oxnard, California), Ryan D. Kingsbery (Anchorage, Alaska), Mattie C. Gullatt (Austin), Austin G. Kingsbery (Austin). Sam married Charline Edwards of Ruston, Louisiana in 1983 and they resided in Bryan/College Station and Lufkin. Upon Charline's passing in 2002 Sam moved to Salado. He married Olive Lambert of Austin and Dallas in April 2003 and he and Olive have lovingly shared these last five years together. Sam graduated from Louisiana Tech cum laude with a degree in electrical engineering in 1942. He subsequently became a commissioned officer in the Navy without having attended the Naval Academy. As Commander Gullatt, he served with valor and distinction as Executive Officer and Engineering Officer (second and third in command) aboard the submarines U.S.S. Haddock and U.S.S. Mapiro in the Pacific during World War II. He served as Staff Commander Submarine Force Pacific Fleet. Sam received a Bronze Star for his service during his six war patrols. His citation noted his "excellent judgment, resourcefulness, and coolness." He was an expert in sonar and missile defense, whose work on the subjects stood for decades. During the war years, he became a Christian Scientist, and served for many years in the Christian Science church as a reader, a Sunday school teacher, and church board member. Following the War, Sam obtained graduate degrees from Georgia Tech and had a successful career in electrical engineering with General Electric, Tracor, and Rehler Reitzer and Johnson, and he consulted for a number of other firms. His work, which was often classified, took him everywhere from Santa Barbara to Saudi Arabia and Ithaca, NY to Austin. He was professor of electrical engineering at Louisiana Tech and Texas A&M; he was Teacher of the Year numerous times at both institutions. Sam insisted his students understand and practically apply the subject matter, not just answer test questions. He retired from Texas A&M in 1992. Sam was also an avid golfer and gardener. He was president of the Louisiana Camellia Society, and developed unique strands of camellias. He is remembered by many friends and family including his wife, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews, for his moral character, adherence to principle, humility, love, and joy. All were touched by his generosity, graciousness, and genuineness. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Louisiana Tech or the school of your choice in Sam's name. The greatest honor one can pay Sam is to be kind to, love, and help one another. on December 13, 2008.4

Betty Kathryn Minnick was buried at Monterey City Cemetery, 798 Fremont Street, Monterey, Monterey Co., California.6,5 She was born on October 28, 1926 at Shawnee, Fountain Co., Indiana.3,5 As of August 21, 1955,her married name was Siegrist.5 She married Richard Lewis Siegrist on August 21, 1955 at Attica, Fountain Co., Indiana.5,7 Betty Kathryn Minnick died on May 7, 2012 at Carmel, Monterey Co., California, at age 85.5 She CARMEL, CALIF. - Betty Siegrist passed away quietly at her home in Carmel, Calif. on Monday, May 7 after a time of declining health. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Richard Siegrist, in 2006. Betty is survived by her three children: Gretchen Siegrist-Ortega (Doug); Alan Siegrist (Mitsuko); and Scott Siegrist (Barbara), and by her three grandchildren: Ashley Allen, Frederick Daichi Siegrist, and Adam Yuki Siegrist. Betty was the youngest of four children born to Blanche and Dowe Minnick. Betty is survived by her elder sister Anne Galloway (Dale) and predeceased by Dorothy "Dottie" and Daniel Minnick. Betty was born in Shawnee Township to Blanche (McConahay) and Dowe Minnick on October 28, 1926 and raised in Attica. She graduated from Attica High School in 1944 and from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1949. Betty and Richard were introduced by a mutual friend, Peggy Poston, at IU and were married in Attica in the Minnick family home on August 21, 1955. Dick got a job at Lockheed Aeronautics Company in Sunnyvale, California thus moving the couple to California. They lived in Santa Clara for several years before relocating to the Monterey Peninsula in 1963. Richard and Betty owned and operated Edgemere Cottages in Carmel for more than 35 years. The move to Carmel was great for Dick and Betty; they loved running the inn, visiting with guests from all over the world, and sometimes getting invited to visit them as well; though they rarely traveled far from home… Betty loved to garden…she was fastidious about the roses in her garden. She loved finding a 'great deal' or searching for 'treasures' at estate sales around Carmel. This led to her owning and operating her "antique and collectible" shop Edgemere of Carmel in two locations for about 15 years in downtown Carmel. She and Dick were founding members of the Carmel Chamber of Commerce and were charter members of the Monterey Aquarium. She was an active member of the Carmel Innkeepers Association for many years. During the last several years Betty attended the VNA Adult Day Care Center in Monterey. She really loved "going to class." The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care and compassion exhibited by Mia and her staff at the VNA Center. "Angel," her driver for the MST Rides program, is truly an "angel on Earth." The family would also like to thank Dr. Glenn Hudgens for his attention and helpfulness with mom over the years. Betty will be interred at the City of Monterey Cementerio El Encinal next to her husband, Dick. on June 4, 2012.5

Dick and Betty were married on August 21, 1955 in Attica, Indiana after meeting at IU. After moving to California, Dick worked for Lockheed and then Firestone before settling down and living for 43 years in Carmel where Dick and Betty raised their children while operating the Edgemere Cottages bed and breakfast. Dick was well spoken and careful in his choice of words. He was generous and had a strong sense of responsibility and fair play. Dick enjoyed bowling and taught his children to play the game, as well as poker and other card games. He had a hearty laugh and smile for those he met and always seemed to find a way to make everyone else laugh along. He couldn't resist a Big Band tune to be enjoyed on the dance floor with a pretty girl, especially his daughter or granddaughter. Dick was cremated and his ashes will be scattered at sea. on September 2, 2006.5
