     Norma Lee Tamer Memorial services for Norma Lee Tamer Hess, age 84, of Cookeville, were held Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Rev Joe Weatherly officiated. Mrs. Hess left this life Saturday, March 27, 2021 at her home following a long struggle with cancer. She was born on May 13, 1936 in Norton, VA to the late Fred Joseph Tamer and Evelyn Swain Tamer Harry (Bill Harry). Mrs. Hess married the Rev. Cameron Mason Hess in 1955. Father Hess preceded her in death in 2008. She graduated from Christiansburg High School in Christiansburg, VA and from the University of TN at Martin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. After raising six children, Mrs. Hess worked outside the home as a pre-school teacher at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cookeville and for the State of TN Department of Corrections as a Youth Probation Officer until her retirement. She is survived by five sons: Mike (Maria) Hess of Wasilla, Alaska; Rik (Andrea) Hess of Cookeville, Todd (Kim) Hess of Cookeville, Tim Hess of Crossville, and Doug Hess of Frederick, Colorado; daughter, Cathy Langford of Cookeville; ten grandchildren: Daniel Hess, Torey (Katy) Hess, Christopher Hess, Ty (April) Langford, Taylor (Casey) Ferrell, Alexandrea Hess, Mason Hess, Hayden Hess, Ava Hess, and Ella Hess; and nine great-grandchildren: Tucker Hess, Keller Hess, Rettie Jane Ferrell, Saydee Ferrell, Tenley Kate Hess, Avery Ferrell, Adelaide Langford, Aubrey Langford, and Brody Ferrell. Our Norma was a true servant of God and spent her life in quiet service of Him. She inspired all who were blessed to know and love her. While she will be missed, we rejoice in knowing she is, at last, home. We are saddened to announce that due to COVID-19 pandemic precautions, the memorial service for Mrs. Hess was limited to family only.1 She was born on May 13, 1936 at Norton, Wise Co., Virginia.1,3 As of September 3, 1955,her married name was Hess.4 She married Rev.      His Social Security Number was 231-30-9655.4 Rev. Cameron Mason Hess Rev. Canon Cameron Mason Hess, age 74 of Cookeville passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008 after a battle with cancer. He was born May 24, 1933 in Newport, Virginia to the late Carl and Mary Kent Hess. Father Hess graduated from Christiansburg High School in Christiansburg, Virginia in 1950. After high school he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean Conflict. After he was discharged in 1954, he married Norma Lee Tamer Hess in 1955. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1958 with a BA in sociology. He worked as an athletic coach at Beaumont School for Boys in Goochland, Virginia, where he was later promoted to assistant superintendent of the school. In 1960 he attained a master of science in vocational rehabilitation from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He and his family moved to Florida where he was hired to establish a guidance department for The Florida School for Boys. In 1963 he entered St. Luke's Episcopal Seminary in Sewanee. Father Hess graduated with a master of divinity and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1966. He subsequently served several churches in Florida, Virginia and Tennessee. Throughout his ministry, Father Hess also served in the Army Reserves and Tennessee National Guard. He retired as a colonel in 1993 from the position of state chaplain after 38 years of service to his country with numerous commendations and awards. Father Hess retired from his last full-time position as priest at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Cookeville in 1997 after 21 years with that parish and more than 40 total years as an ordained priest. Shortly after his retirement he was appointed the title of Honorary Canon to the Bishop for his many years of outstanding service to the diocese. After his retirement he served as interim priest at the Church of the Redeemer in Shelbyville and at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in McMinnville, as well as supplying at several other churches around the Diocese of Tennessee. Father Hess was an avid golfer and golf club trader. He played on many courses around Tennessee and other southern states. He was an accomplished athlete. He loved sports and spent most of his life coaching or playing. He was also a founding member of the McDonald's Morning Golfing Association. He also loved to garden and was proud of the produce with which he fed his family. Three days before he died, Father Hess wrote most of this obituary himself and asked that the following be included, "I've had a great family and a great wife and 40 years of ministry. Who could ask for more? Thanks be to God." In addition to his wife, his family includes five sons and four daughters-in-law: Mike and Maria Hess of Alaska, Rik and Andrea Hess of Smyrna, Todd and Kim Hess of Cookeville, Tim and Jennifer Hess of Crossville and Doug Hess and Maura McGovern of Denver, Colorado; a daughter: Cathy Langford of Cookeville; a sister and brother-in-law: Vina and George Poff of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren: Daniel, Torey, Chris and Ty Langford, and Taylor, Alex, Mason and Hayden Hess; a great grandchild: Tucker Cameron Hess; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Becky McCoy. Memorial services with military honors were held Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Rt. Rev. John Bauerschmidt, Bishop Diocese of Tennessee officiated the services.2 He was born on May 24, 1933 at Newport, Giles Co., Virginia.2,4 He married Norma Lee Tamer, daughter of Fred Joseph Tamer and Evelyn L.
