Capt. Edmund Scarburgh I Burgess1
M, b. 1584, d. before February 19, 1634/35
Capt. Edmund Scarburgh I Burgess He was a Barrister. Captain Edmund Scarburgh lived for a time in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields parish, London. As requested in his father's will (5 Sep 1606) Edmund was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge, England, 15 Apr 1602 and remained at Caius College until he had taken the degree of barrister. Jennings Cropper Wise reported that he came to Virginia for the first time about 1620, leaving his family in England. However no proof of this has been found. By 1628-29 he had settled with his family on Magothy Bay on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he was a Commissioner for the Plantation of Accomack in 1631 and represented Accomack in the House of Burgesses in 1629, 1631, and 1632, and was presiding Commissioner of the first court held in Accomack County in 1632 and served until his death. He died intestate after 17 April 1634, the last time he served as a member of the Accomack Court, and prior to 9 January 1635, when Hannah Scarburgh, "widow," sold cattle to Captain Thomas Graves (Ames, Mears & Allied Lines, pp. 345-346). His wife Hannah "Scarborough" was also referred to as a widow on 19 Feb 1634/5 (N'hamp Orders, Wills, Deeds, etc, f. 48).1 He was born in 1584 at North Walsham, County Norfolk, England.1 He married Hannah "Anna" Smith, daughter of Rev. Edmund Smith and Alice Barry, before February 1, 1615 at England.1 Capt. Edmund Scarburgh I Burgess died before February 19, 1634/35 at Northampton Co., Virginia; It was on this date that the records referred to Hannah Scarborough widow.1
