She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Armstrong Vail, Jr., who died in 1984, and by her only child, Sue Annette Vail, who died in 1987. Ella Sue Pack was born on October 21, 1911, in Giles County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Karl Clinton Pack and Laura Elmore Pack. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Henderson Pack and Sarah Elizabeth Douthat Pack. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Elmore and Sarah Wiseman Elmore. The oldest daughter in a family of seven children, she grew up on the family farm in the shadow of Angel's Rest Mountain, near Pearisburg, the county seat of Giles County. Throughout her long life, she treasured her memories of and associations with her beloved Giles County. After graduating from high school in Pearisburg, she began training for her R.N. degree at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Roanoke. In 1946, they moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where they lived for 12 years. In 1958, the Vails moved to Charlottesville, where they made their home at 1822 Meadowbrook Heights Road. Mr. Vail retired from the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in 1977. Sue was a longtime member and faithful steward of St. Paul's Memorial Episcopal Church in Charlottesville. Her abiding interests included a love of antiques, flowers, her native state, her family and friends, and family history. She enjoyed planning family gatherings and entertaining her many friends, both young and old. She is survived by two sisters, Clara Pack Foster of Roanoke, Virginia, and Nita Pack Carr of Princeton, West Virginia. She is also survived by a brother, Sidney Garland Pack of West Virginia, and many nieces and nephews.
