Arthur, 92, passed away quietly on Sept. 23, 2014 at the Bridgewater Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, Va. A wonderful wife, mother and friend, she will be remembered by everyone for her spirit, her quick smile and her optimism for all occasions. She graduated from Charleston High School in January 1939, and married James W. "Jim" Arthur Jr. in May 1939. They were married for over 71 years, and lived in Kanawha City for most of those years. The joys of her life were always centered around family, church and camp. She was a charter member of the Village Chapel Presbyterian Church and taught kindergarten there for many years, instilling in young children strong moral values and a love of learning. Betty and Jim loved spending time at their camp on the Greenbrier River, where she walked miles and miles on the Greenbrier River Trail, usually while Jim was out fishing. At home, she walked 3-4 miles most days until she was 86. If she wasn't walking, she was either reading, working in her backyard flowerbeds, or baking something sweet to eat. Her creation of many, many hand-hooked rugs showcased her beautiful soul and she will be hugely missed by her surviving children: Stephen (and Betty) Arthur of Benson, Vt., Denny (and Becky) Arthur of Mt. Crawford, Va., and Karen (and Dennis) Shaw of Fairfield Glade, Tenn; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. on October 1, 2014.4
