He was born in Patrick County on May 27, 1948 to Richard and Gertice Harbour Hughes of Stuart. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Beulah Snyder Hughes of the home; three sons, Sammy Hughes and wife, Michelle of Patrick Springs, Danny Hughes and fianc, Mary Bowman of Meadows of Dan, and Timmy Perry of Bassett; one daughter, Ginger Hughes of Bassett; one stepson, Robert Shay of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Candice Hughes, Benjamin Hughes, Ethen Hughes, Christopher Shay; and two sisters, Christine Layman of Stuart and Rachel Love of Claudville. He was preceded in death by his brother, Benny Lee Hughes, and an infant brother. Funeral services for Mr. Hughes will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. David Heath, the Rev. Rick Byerly, and the Rev. Cletus Lackey officiating. Interment will follow in the Hughes Family Cemetery. on August 12, 2000.⁶
