     James Carroll Lovin James (Jim and Papa) Carroll Lovin, age 82 of Brevard, passed away peacefully at the Elizabeth (Hospice) House in Flat Rock, NC in the early morning hours of March 15, 2019. Jim was one of three children, born October 15, 1936 to the late William and Liddy Elmore Lovin in West Virginia. He was raised in Ashland, KY where he met his wife of 57 years, Alice Matney Lovin who preceded him in death in 2013. Jim attended Polytechnical Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He also attended Columbia School of Business – Financial Management. Jim became interested in the paper industry after working with his father at Ashland Oil during college. He began his career shortly after college with Mead Corp. as Director of Research and Development, Administration and Business Planning. Jim moved to Brevard in 1972 and dedicated his life to serving his community and establishing lifetime friendships with fellow Ecusta employees as Vice President of Manufacturing for 22 years as well as with many friends in the community. His legacy was also his life’s philosophy to treat others as you would like to be treated, showing respect, compassion and integrity to all. As Jim would like to say, “you have to walk it like you talk it”. He considered all the employees at Ecusta as his friends, working side by side, always having their best interest as a top priority. He accomplished many accolades during his lifetime but considered his family, church and friends as his most cherished blessings. The following were some of Jim’s accomplishments and services to his community: various lay leadership positions at First United Methodist Church of Brevard, Director of NC State University Pulp and Paper Foundation, President of Paper Management Association(PIMA), Trustee of Brevard College, Trustee of Blue Ridge Community College; Director of First Union National Bank of Brevard; Board Member of Transylvania Regional Hospital, member of Transylvania County Economic Development Commission, and Board Member of the City of Brevard Planning Board. In addition to his parents and his wife, Jim was also preceded in death by a son, Mike Lovin; grandson, John Joyner; brother, Bill Lovin; sister, Judy Pennington. Survivors include his daughter, Pam Hill and husband Jimmy; granddaughter, Allie Fullerton and husband Bengi; daughter-in-law, Barbara Lovin; sisters-in-law, Betty Lovin and Frances Martin; nieces and nephews, Stuart Lovin, Scott Lovin, Will McGinnis, Steve Pennington, Steve Martin, Beth Clarke and Shawn Martin.¹ He was buried at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Pisgah Forest, Transylvania Co., North Carolina.⁴ He was born on October 15, 1936 at West Virginia.^1,4 He married Alice A. Matney died on December 5, 2013 at North Carolina at age 77.^5,3 She ASHLAND - Alice Matney Lovin, 77, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013. She was a daughter of the late Frank Eugene and Belva Cox Matney. She also was preceded in death by her brother, Curtis Matney, and grandson, John Michael Joyner. Alice volunteered as a nursing assistant at various medical facilities in Henderson County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brevard. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, James C. Lovin; daughter Pamela Sue Hill and husband James of Asheboro, N.C; son James Michael Lovin and wife Barbara of Tucker, Ga; sister Frances Eugenia Martin of Ashland; and granddaughter Alexandra Nicole Hill. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at First United Methodist Church of Brevard. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory. on December 6, 2013.³

Dr. Lovin is survived by his wife, Betty Mae Shockey Lovin; daughter, Stacy Leigh Lovin Stevens and sons, William Scott Lovin and Jeffrey Stuart Lovin and his wife, Kiekie; grandchildren, Kayla and Kevin Stevens, Michael and Adam Lovin and Elijah and Caleb Lovin; and brother, Jim Lovin and his wife, Alice Matney Lovin. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Mary Julia Pennington. Dr. Lovin practiced family dentistry in Ashland for 30 years. A lifetime member of FIVCO, Dr. Lovin served as a member of the Executive Board. He served the community as a member of the Kentucky State Health Executive Planning Committee, president of the Kentucky Dental Association and as a Kentucky delegate to the American Dental Association. Dr. Lovin lived a full life, serving the Lord, caring for his family and serving his community with love and dedication. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland with the Rev. Robert L. He was born July 12, 1939 in Ashland, KY. A son of the late James and Edith Howard Pennington. He was a member of the Westwood Church of God, a Kentucky Colonel and a lifetime member of the disabled veterans. He spent more than 30 years in the Telecom Industry. He was the former president of Mid Eastern COE Instillation Inc. He was also the founding partner and president of Telephony Technology International, a local training center that provided job training for hundreds of area men and women. Ballard was a US Navy veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict era, which is where he became disabled, and also serving a short time during the Vietnam era. During his time in the military, he served aboard the USS Compton and the USS Shenandoah. His wife, Mary J. Loving Pennington of Ashland survives him. Two sons, James Will McGinnis of Harrodsburg, KY and Steven Ballard Pennington of Ashland; one brother, Thomas D. Pennington of Wurtland, KY; two sisters, Helen M. Cartwright and JoRita Bandy both of Ashland. He is survived by five grandchildren and one great grandchild. There will be a graveside service conducted at 1 pm Sun., at the Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, by the Pastor Chris Keeton and Pastor Bob Queen. The Ironton VFW # 8300 will conduct military services. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. on February 19, 2005.²

She was born in McRoberts, Ky., on October 23, 1935, to the late Oliver Wendell and Lake Erie Blair Shockey. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Dr. William Lovin; brothers William Raymond Shockey and Oliver Wendell Shockey, Jr; sisters Mattie Louise Shockey Points and Doris Jean Shockey Elliott; and her grandson Adam Lovin. Betty was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend and homemaker. She brought love and joy to every life she touched. She is survived by her three children, William Scott Lovin, Stacy Leigh Lovin Stevens, and Jeffrey Stuart Lovin; grandchildren, Michael Lovin, Kayla Stevens (Mason Eastham), Douglas Kevin Stevens II (Drew Acree) Elijah and Caleb Lovin; great-grandchildren Ronin and Axel Lovin; and her sister Margaret Ann (John Mason) Sturgill. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. The family appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 7, at 11 a.m. at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel and will be officiated by Chaplain Jimm Smedley.
