James G. Chatham was born on August 1, 1933 at Ohio.2 He died on July 5, 1955 at Montpelier, Williams Co., Ohio, at age 21.1 He An Ohio Turnpike worker suffered fatal injuries early Thursday morning when his auto swerved off U.S. Route 20, Northwest of Montpelier and crashed head on into a tree. The victim was James G. Chatham, 21, of rt. 2, Edon, who died from his injuries four hours after the crash at the Williams County General Hospital, at Montpelier. His 1952 Pontiac coach was demolished by the impact. Investigating officers were unable to determine immediately with the man was on his way to work at the time or was returning to his home. He resided with his mother, Mrs. Lulu Reece, one-fourth mile east of Columbia, in Northwest township. It is believed the mishap happened shortly before 4 a.m., although there were no witnesses. The car was westbound, when at a curve six miles Northwest of Montpellier, it left the highway on the right side in a construction area, and careened straight into a tree. A short time later the wreckage was noticed by a driver of a passing transport truck, who notified the sheriff's department. A wrecker was rushed to the scene and about 30 minutes elapsed before the victim could be extricated. The car first was pulled away from the tree and then was broken apart to get to the occupant. Chatham suffered fractures of the left ankle, left hip and skull, and the six inch forehead gash. He was removed by ambulance to the hospital where he died shortly after 8 a.m. His death was the 13th traffic fatality on Williams county highways for this year, and the first since April 11. The body is at the Thompson funeral home in Montpelier pending arrangements for services. Besides his mother, Chatham is survived by his father, James C. Chatham of Manitou Beach, Michigan. on July 7, 1955.1
