     Robert Alvin Slater Robert A. Slater, 69, of 405 E. Charles Street, Bucyrus, died April 12, 2007, at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Born November 29, 1937, in Bucyrus, he was the son of Alvin and Lela (Loyer) Slater. Slater is survived by his wife of 37 years, Judy (Stiefel); sister, Betty and husband Edward Ricker of Spring, Texas; nephew, Tom and wife Angela Ricker of Spring, Texas; three greatnephews, Aaron, A.J. and Evan Ricker of Troy, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Jerry Ricker and an infant brother. Mr. Slater graduated from Chatfield School and attended Capital University. In 1956 he became involved in the direct selling industry. Last July marked his 50th anniversary in that field. At one time, Bob owned The Chateau, which housed many area catered affairs. From 1979 to 1995, Bob and his wife owned and operated Faces & Fashions in downtown Bucyrus. In 1976 they established Slater Tours, which is primarily known for its New York City theatre tours. He was devoted to his community. For 28 years he proudly served as the senior choir director of Good Hope Lutheran Church. He has directed the Relay for Life choir each year, as well as the choir for the 9/11 memorial service and the 175th anniversary of the Bucyrus choir. He was a founding member of the Crawford County Community Concert Association and served as president throughout most of its 31 years. For more than 40 years Bob was a member of the Bucyrus Little Theatre, where he was active on the board of directors in many capacities. He was actively involved as a member of Kiwanis and served on the boards of the Salvation Army and HomeCare Matters. In 2006 he received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Bucyrus Area Chamber of Commerce. A memorial service was held Saturday in the Good Hope Lutheran Church, Bucyrus, with pastors John Kerr, Michael Wiechers and Harold Hasenauer officiating.6 He was born on November 29, 1937 at Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio.2,3,5,6 He married Judith A. Bud was born in Galion and was the son of the late Gaylord and Minnie Ricker. On June 23, 1946, he married his wife of 60 years Betty Slater, and she survives. Other survivors include a son, Tom Ricker and wife Angela of Spring, Texas; three grandsons, Aaron Ricker of the U.S. Navy and fiance Patrice, A.J. Ricker of Texas, Evan Ricker and wife Heather of Troy, Ohio; a sister, Virginia Smith of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Judy Slater of Bucyrus. He is preceded in death by a son, Jerry Ricker, and a brother-in-law, Bob Slater. He was a 1940 graduate of Galion High School and in 1942 enlisted in the Navy and seiyed four years in the South Pacific as a seabee. Bud worked for 32 years at Timken in Bucyrus as a maintenance supervisor from 1950-1970 then from 1970-1982 he was at the Timken plant in Gaffney, S.C., and retired after 32 years. Mr. Ricker had been active in the Bucyrus City Schools, past president of the PTA and Fourth Ward councilman for 10 years. Memberships include the VFW, American Legion Post 181, past master of Nevada Masonic Lodge, past worthy patron of Nevada Eastern Star, Masonic Chapter and Council of the Bucyrus Lodge and former member of St Pauls Lutheran Church of Bucyrus. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Neumann officiating. A Masonic service will be provided by the Nevada Lodge and will begin at 1:45 p.m. Burial of ashes will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military services provided by the American Legion Post 181. on May 13, 2007.5

Smith, 62, of 74 South Fourth Ave., Clarion, former editor of the old Clarion Democrat, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday in Clarion hospital. He was born September 18, 1910 in Wilkinsburg, a son of Walter L. and Blanche Ambrose Smith. On November 18, 1937, he married the former Frances Louise Zilhaver, who survives. Following his graduation from Ohio State University, Mr. Smith worked for newspapers in Donora, Braddock, and Pittsburgh. He came to Clarion in 1934 as editor of the old Democrat under its publisher the late W. L. Samson. He remained with the Democrat until 1939. He was asked by the management of the Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Clarion, in 1940 to aid in the creation of a plant newspaper ultimately named Conveyor. He served as its editor until his retirement from active newspaper work in January 1966. Unable to remain completely completely retired however Mr. Smith continued to lend his time and talents to the Clarion news successor to the Democrat. After leaving the Democrat he served as manager of the Clarion Chamber of Commerce and later as administrative assistant to the State Treasurer Grace Sloan 1961-63. He was president and secretary of the Clarion Kiwannis Club and helped found the Clarion BOPE Lodge. He acted as director of the Campbell Health Center and publicly chairman for organizations such as the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America, and U.S. Saving Bond campaigns in the area. He was active in the Clarion County Bucktails and Clarion Rifle Club. During his more than 40 years as an active newsman, Mr. Smith was frequently honored by state and national groups for his professional excellence He was cited by the Pennsylvania Governor's Traffic Safety Commission, Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association, the American Trucking Association and Freedom Foundation for articles he published. His greatest honor came in 1971 when he was elected to membership in the Sigma Delta Chi, International Journalism Society. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilkinsburg. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Louise Smith, he is survived by two sons, Walter L. Smith III of Pittsburgh and Charles P. Smith of Erie; one daughter, Mrs. John (Marsha) Pilat of Indiana, Pa; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Friend's may call at the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with Rev. Howard Blanchard, pastor of the Baptist Church of Clarion, officiating. He loved to drive trucks and travel the states enjoying new towns and experiences when he wasn't driving his rig. David loved working on cars. Family was important to him. He dearly loved his wife, "Baby Woo Woo." They loved to travel together, especially trips to Florida to see family. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. on December 16, 2019.2
