He was born in Green Sulphur Springs to Benjamin Franklin Gary and Sylvia Hix Gray. He was a 1945 graduate of Welch High School, Welch, and was retired from Consolidated Coal at Turkey Gap Mine after 33 years. Raymond served in the United States Navy in the Pacific aboard the USS Alaska during World War II. He was a 39-year resident of Kimball, where he was a member of Houston United Methodist Church, serving over 30 years as Treasurer of the Sunday School. After moving to Princeton in 1989, he was a member of Stinson United Methodist Church on the Oakvale Road in Princeton. He was an active member of the Twilight Twirlers Square Dance Club and the Bluefield Virginia Ballroom Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Louise Hartwell, Virginia Mease, Rosalie Garten and Lorene Price, as well as an infant sister and brother. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Day Gray, of the home. Additional survivors include his daughter Sharon and spouse David of Rocky Gap, VA, sons, David and spouse Trula of Lillington, NC; Larry and spouse Carol of Princeton; and Barry and spouse Russell of Roanoke, VA. Four grandchildren: Chris Gray and spouse Stacy of Angier, NC; Olivia Gray of Durham, NC; David Larkin Jr. and spouse Ashley of Charleston, SC; and Nicole Larkin of Lewisburg; and his great grandson and the light of his eyes, David Joseph Raymond Larkin of Charleston, SC. One brother, Billy Gray of Conway, SC. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 10, 2014 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Devin Olachea officiating. He will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with grandchildren serving as pallbearers: Chris and Olivia Gray, David and Nicole Larkin; nephews Roger Garten, Harry Gregory, Rick Gregory, Mike Day, and Philip Peterson; and family friend, David Warren. on March 9, 2014.5

Garten, retired purchasing director for the St. Lucie County School District and a principal at the former Dan McCarty High School, died Monday of an aneurysm. Mr. Garten, 83, was purchasing director from 1964 until he retired in 1973. He served as principal of Dan McCarty from 1960 to 1964 and was assistant principal at Fort Pierce Junior High School from 1958 to 1960. He was president of the South-side Kiwanis Club and a member of the Sunshine Kiwanis Club. Mr. Garten, born in Raleigh County, W.Va., graduated from Concord College, Athens, W.Va., and received a master's degree from West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., in 1940. He taught, coached and was principal at Green Sulphur Springs District High School in West Virginia before entering the Army Air Corps in 1941. He returned to that school as principal after World War II. Survivors include his wife, Rosalie G., Fort Pierce; daughter Cecilia G.
