For about 45 years, Hughes had been office manager for Empire Life Insurance Co. and Commonwealth Insurance Co. in the Bedford, Paoli and Bloomington areas. He was a member of Southland Church of Christ, Bedford Elks Lodge, Lions Club, Bedford Masonic Lodge and the American Legion, and a veteran of World War II. Born Sept. 24, 1908, in Monon, he was the son of Burt and Ella Mae (Stiles) Hughes. Survivors include his wife, Catherine (Quackenbush), whom he married May 8, 1948; a son, Max Hughes of Vincennes; a sister, Viola Klinger of Lafayette; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. A daughter and two brothers are deceased. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Day and Carter Mortuary in Bedford, with entombment in Cresthaven Mausoleum in Bedford. Military rites will be conducted by members of the Gillem Post No. 33 of the American Legion. on October 31, 1988.3

Surviving are his mother of Vincennes; a daughter, Teresa LaFromboise of San Carlos, Calif; two sons, Dierk of Terre Haute and Doug of Cincinnati; four sisters, Connie Gognat, Naomi Zwolinski, Anita Wolfe and Sondra Sievers, all of Vincennes; two brothers, Lyle Davis of Martinsville and Ron Davis of Vincennes; and, four grandchildren. His wife, Bettie M. (Hughes) Davis, is deceased. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James Blessinger.
