Lucille Theresa Theisen was buried at Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Higginsville, 20109 Business Highway 13, Higginsville, Lafayette Co., Missouri.5,4 Her Social Security Number was 369-26-7165.3 She was born on December 24, 1928 at Highland Park, Wayne Co., Michigan.1,5,3,4 As of August 25, 1951,her married name was Engelman.1 She married Dr. Joseph Aloysius Engelman, son of Morton Valentine Engelman and Gladys Vivian Holt, on August 25, 1951 at Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.1,2,4 Lucille Theresa Theisen died on February 9, 2007 at Columbia, Boone Co., Missouri, at age 78.5,3,4 She Lucille Theresa Theisen Engelman, 79, died peacefully while listening to "Messiah" on Friday, Feb. 9, 2007. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. There will be a memorial service for Lucille and Joseph Engelman at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Newman Center, 701 Maryland Ave. in Columbia. Her husband, Joseph A. Engelman, who preceded her departure by 18 months, was her true love and best friend. Together, they raised seven children; Michael, Thomas, Robert, Daniel, Peter, Jane and Stephen. Lucille and Joseph's children have given them 14 grandchildren. Lucille was born on Christmas Eve, 1928, to John Eusebius Theisen and Mary Elizabeth St. Germain in Highland Park, Mich., along with siblings John, Frank and Margaret. She attended St. Brigid School and Immaculata High School, Archdiocese of Detroit; worked for General Motors Corp. during World War II; and attended the University of Detroit's College of Commerce and Finance, earning a certificate in secretarial science in 1948. She married Joseph A. Engelman on Aug. 25, 1951, in Detroit. They lived in Whitmore Lake, Mich., for three years, then in Ann Arbor, Mich., for seven years as Joseph practiced dentistry. They moved to St. Louis in 1963, so Joseph could complete a master's degree at Washington University's School of Dental Medicine. After Joseph's graduation, they moved to Columbia, where they would work and live for the rest of their lives. Lucille often worked in Joseph's office. Supporting her husband, his practice, their home, garden and children were burdens that were always light for her. She cultivated in all an interest and love of the arts, be they written, sung or viewed. She dragged her children to countless performances and exhibits at museums, concert halls and outdoor venues. She insisted on strict adherence to audience protocol at concerts and required that they stop at each painting or exhibit in museums and read the adjoining card of information about the piece. Museum "express tours" were not permitted. Her children would later realize that these experiences had brought a rich texture to their lives. Music was her special passion, with a penchant toward traditional folk and folk related music, but Handel's "Messiah" was her favorite. She might have listened to the "Messiah" more times than anyone on Earth, beginning to play it for the holidays sometime in mid-September and stopping sometime in March. Lucille loved the fact that her children all played musical instruments, and she loved a good marching band. She would sing incessantly, accompanied or not. Her voice was so strong that she successfully covered her children's cacophonous bellowing in church, much to her pleasure. She was the glue that kept her seven children and husband from spinning out of control and remaining a real family unit for years. Subtle and always courteous and understated, she made no negative waves, instead smoothing the waters for all. She would bring her family down to earth, keeping them grounded with comments such as "No one is looking at you" if they became too ostentatious or self-important. She required that everyone get along and that her children get along with everyone noting that, "We are all related out in the bush somewhere." She was deceptively wise but always curious - never "in the know," always "in the mystery". She championed the "Mystery Trip," an outing where the children would be unaware of the final destination. It was risky business to be certain, the kids not knowing whether they were going to an apple orchard or a performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. A realist, she never liked Mother Goose or "The Wind in the Willows," maintaining that "animals don't talk." She taught us to cook, sew, clean, do the laundry and make our own medical appointments at a young age, espousing self-reliance and insisting that everyone needs to know how to take care of themselves. In fact, she went back to school in her 50s, finishing her Bachelor of Arts at Stephens College in 1985, to, as she would say, "remain competitive" in the event that she would need to become the bread-winner. She loved the outdoors, flowers, plants and wildlife, insisting that wildflowers not be picked so that they could further prosper so that others could enjoy them. When her children were younger and troubled, she held their hands and pointed out flowers and leaves. In the Christmas snow, she would hang grapevine wreaths and flowers on the neighbor widow's fence. Every flower, every fruit was a marvel. Late in life, she developed Alzheimer's disease. Still a day was not wasted that was spent driving the country roads in search of wildflowers growing in farmers' fields. Life was an opportunity to do something beautiful, something kind. She had a practice of quietly whispering with joy and relief when turning off the country road into her gravel drive toward her home in the woods overlooking a small pond, "Here we are." And at night she loved to fall asleep to the sounds of "Messiah." A kind soul who will be dearly missed, all of us and the Earth are a better place for having had her here, if for even a short time. on February 14, 2007.4
